Yes, as the New York Times reports, transitioning to a military where there is no discrimination against gay people will present structural difficulties. So did racial integration of the military. So did enhancement of the role of women in the military, from cockpits to submarines.
It is still jarring to read conservatives' complaints about a zero tolerance discrimination policy. But that is the nut of it. Those who oppose the repeal, those who won't vote for ENDA -- Berry, Ross and Boozman, to name three -- are expressing in the most explicit terms that they support the legal right of Americans to discriminate against and marginalize a group of people on account of their sexual orientation. Not their behavior. Not their competence. Not their courage. Their chemistry.
Hurry the day when liberty and justice for all holds meaning for gay people, too.
