Columnist: UA a 'drag' on SEC

Posted by Max Brantley on Tue, Jun 8, 2010 at 11:25 AM

OK, he's just one Alabama sports columnist and a notoriously sour one at that. But Paul Finebaum writes:

In the mad dash for the Southeastern Conference to expand, it might be worth looking back 20 years to the last time the league went down this long and winding road.

When the league announced its expansion plans in 1990, once again Texas was the prettiest girl at the ball but rejected the SEC's overtures. Florida State was seriously courted and chose the ACC instead. The SEC ended up with Arkansas and South Carolina. So how did that turn out?

Since 1992, when the league expansion went into effect, has either Arkansas or South Carolina really brought anything to the dance? Instead of expanding by two or four, some have wondered if a better way of handling this would be addition by subtraction - starting with sending Arkansas and South Carolina back where they came from.

Take Arkansas ... please

Even before Vandy?

What Arkansas and South Carolina have not "brought to the dance" is a major tv market. This is all about the money.... television money. It's not about competition, fandom, loyalty, or character, and it's certainly not about education. It's not even about anything but football. I know that football generates the most money, but are the supporters of other sports really willing to let football run roughshod over everything? Including other sports?

Does geography ever count? Texas would be Southwest. Arkansas is sorta 'twinx, East and West, central time, Little Rock being 2 deg W of the 90th meridian.

Before we get too worked up... even Paul Finebaum doesn't believe Paul Finebaum. He's a hack who says things to generate calls.

Just one problem, Arkansas beat Texas to the punch on leaving the SWC and after they left the SWC collapsed. Texas had their legislature get involved in the politics of what school went where and screwed the pooch for UT.

Is my memory failing, or didn't Arkansas bring a NCAA basketball championship to the "dance?"

Who really cares what Alabama Feinbaum thinks? He would just as soon the conference be limited to AL, Auburn, GA and FL.

Yeah, since joining the SEC, who needs...
Football: four West division titles, 10 bowl appearances
Basketball: four West division titles, two conference titles, one conference tourmament title, two Final Fours, one national championship
Baseball: two conference titles, 13 regionals, four super-regionals, two College World Series
Track: 11 indoor national championships, 11 outdoor national championships

Dufu$.

"Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" dottholliday

I understand that's how a majority of folks feel about track and cross country, but 42 National Championships, is a NCAA record for championships, and is definatley nothing to "snooze" at.

Alabama sure is cocky when it's not on probation. Maybe he was an Auburn fan though... Ha!

Actually, Finebaum is a Tennessee Vol alum. The thinking folks in the Mullet state (oxymoron) pay him no mind. Razorback fans should follow suit.
