How much should BP pay?

Posted by Max Brantley on Thu, Jun 10, 2010 at 1:51 PM

Didn't Tim Griffin say he would vote for John Boehner for speaker of the House if he's elected over Joyce Elliott to represent the 2nd District?

It will be interesting to see if Griffin follows his leader on BP. Boehner made some BP friendly noise recently and is now cleaning up after himself. At a minimum, it appears he favors retaining a $75 million cap on liability for damage caused by BP. Oh, he'll make them clean up spilled oil, yes. But make whole the tens of thousands of people and businesses damaged on the Gulf? Doesn't sound like it.

And Joyce still hasn't answered whether she'd vote for Pelosi.

Here's a news flash. How about holding this administration accountable for not taking a ..... LEADERSHIP role and getting this thing fixed. The administration should be taking an emergency war type lead on this and doing any and everything possible, including using the entire US Navy or whatever else it may take to stop this leak.

Empty and hollow phrases that sound good like "Hope...Change....Yes we Can" all don't do squat do they, when we have a real and major crises right in our own FRONT yard.

If Bush were President, the entire media would be on the biggest rampage ever since Watergate, in demanding the President do SOMETHING, accusations of in bed with big oil, would be the montra of the day. Bush would be crucified if this was occuring on his watch. Yet since its a liberal democrat in office, (and everyone one in the media knows that no democrat can EVER do anything wrong, as long as they're a good liberal and continues to push for more and more government welfare programs, right?) not much of a peep at all from the media, except of course the oil industry bashing itself, which is deserving true.

What ever happened to the good old American press that used to report the news, and go after politicians when they weren't doing their jobs. Guess they went the way of the dodo bird too. What a shame. Meanwhile the gulf is getting more and more polluted, and our prestine Florida beaches are in eminent danger. But I guess as far as the press is concerned, doesn't matter 'cause we got a liberal democrat in office, so who cares? Right?

In another article on TPM the head dude at the US CoC, Tom Donohue, says of the cleanup costs ""Everybody is going to contribute to this clean up. We are all going to have to do it." all meaning Taxpayers.

These are the nice guys who spent the past 6 months telling us what a fine person Blank is and how terribad is Halter. Wonder if they'll now start telling how fine Boozer is and how terribad is Blank.

Of course in my eyes, Blank & Boozer are both worse than the gum (still) on my shoe.

I think it is laughable to this day that Blank ever even got to where she is. I mean is the democratic party really that hard up for candidates in Arkansas? She is about as worthless as a pet rock, with probably less brains, common sense and original ideas other than "yes party leader, just tell me when to say yes, and I'll say yes, unless you want me to say no, and then I'll say no". Don't send my tax dollars to clean up those shores. If those states want the profit that comes from dealing with big oil then they can pay for their own mess.

Why should Obama care? The people in MS, FL, LA hate him and the federal government. Maybe it's time they took care of their own house and stopped holding their hands out for government aid while spitting at those who are subsidizing their lifestyle.

Normally I would agree with you, I'm just pointing out the fact that if this were on Bush's watch, we would never stop hearing from the press about why Bush isn't acting quicker, more efficiently etc., all you would hear is conspiracy theories about Bush and big oil, and a count down to impeachment from the press.

Why don't we just run BP out of business? That will show them up for what they did. Of course, if they go out of business I wonder who will pay for the cleanup?

Well, Waldo, BP has a history of putting profits ahead of safety that has been documented since at least 1998 and there is a process that can make them not eligible for government contracts, including any military contracts (they do about $2 trillion in fuel contract) and can take away their oil leases and I really think that would be start. It isn't the English coastline they are screwing up so let someone else have their leases. And criminal fines for a bunch of people who saw three reports requested by their (BP's) Board that told their Board that they had a problem in this area and they didn't take care of them. This falls under their legal and financial responsibility. I would think their individual Board members better hope they have a very large insurance policy.

And ActMax or whatever, the Federal government doesn't have the capibility to "fix" this CAPITALISTIC screw-up. The industry holds their formulae close. Try to find out what is in the frac solution being pumped into the ground in this state. If we want the government to have the capability to fix such problems, you better be ready for a real rise in your taxes. And, if the LA government hadn't allowed the cuts for pipelines across their barrier islands, Katrina would not have been as a bad and there would have been another island between the marshland and that leaking well.

BurnNotice, she will have only two choices since each party only nominates its leader so I guess you think she might like Bonner's tan? You don't back the your party leader and your committee assignment will the DC sewer committee. And this is true of both parties so don't make it another conspiracy case!

BP is terrible and guilty as charged. Now, if they file for bankruptcy who do you think is going to pay for the clean up?

You, of course, Waldo. You are nominated!

How much should BP pay?

thats an easy one.

How much do they have??

That much. They should pay that much. Please remit at once.

Their big-shot executives can probably live for a while without a bonus this year.

Act Max,

since Halliburton subcontracted a great deal of the well in the first place, I'd say that Bush and Cheney and their cronies are still cuddled up right cozy with big oil. didnt the cheaper method of capping it or whatever come from Halliburton instead of BP?

when bush was in office you squawked all the time that everything was Clinton's fault. Now that Obama is trying to clean up some of the mess that Bush left him, which could take a whole lot longer than 8 years, it's all Obama's fault. no matter what, nothing bad was or is Bush's fault, right? ask the people who lost loved ones in Katrina about that.

I figure about $2,000/gal would cover clean-up and ancillary effects. So...$2000 x 100,000,000 gallons is $200 billion if only 100 million gallons spill. Drop-in-the-bucket for them.
