Arkansas: Another low ranking

Posted by Max Brantley on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 11:09 AM

A Ball State University national report card on manufacturing and logistics generally puts Arkansas toward the bottom. The report card shows particularly low grades on venture capital, productivity and taxes.

  • The Republican third way — magic?

    May 3, 2012
I've made a little fun of the obviousness of news stories quoting Gov. Mike Beebe as saying there are two options to meet the expected huge increase in Medicaid costs — cut services or raise money (either by taxes or taking it from somewhere else, growth in existing revenue streams to begin with). /more/

Entertainment Weekly reports that South Arkansas author Charlaine Harris, whose Sookie Stackhouse books have become big bidness after being translated into HBO's "True Blood" television series, has now sold the rights to her Harper Connelly Mysteries series for development into a series called "Grave Sight." /more/

No doubt this is due to those damn powerful unions that riddle the state of Arkansas like holes in Swiss cheese. Thanks Bad Blanche Lincoln for doing all you can to rid the state of nasty ole unions. Check back in 6 years Mr. Ball State and see how much lower we'll go with another Bad Blanche term under our belt. Or just imagine the hole we'll be in with 6 years of Senator NOozman! All is lost.....all is lost.

Venture capital? Aren't we overlooking that the best source for venture capital in
Arkansas is state and local government.

Anyone else actually flip through this thing? They've got "productivity and innovation" measured partly by the number of patents issued per capita. Seriously? So AR could be #1 in the country if we just all sit at our desks and buy patents for mouse traps that won't work and we'll never use? I guess it wouldn't even take a whole state -- I could run AR up to #1 by this weekend with just my Visa card and some clicking around on the U.S. Patent office website. And who's to say that's not what some guy in California did and that's why they're up near the top of the list?

Seriously folks, most patents never see the light of day in terms of becoming manufactured products -- so I'm not sure why anyone think it makes sense to measure patents on a manufacturing "report card."
