Football coaches go clubbing

Posted by Max Brantley on Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 10:59 AM

It took a lawsuit, but the Paragould Daily News finally got the details on the Greene County Tech football coaches who did a little nightclubbing in Monticello when they should have been back at the motel with the team, resting for a playoff game with Monticello.

For this silliness — and the school district's determination to shield the coaches from exposure — the district will pay $2,500 in legal fees to the newspaper, $4,466 to the local attorney who defended them and perhaps more to an attorney associated with the Arkansas School Boards Association, editor Janie Ginocchio says. Expensive lesson for the kids in lack of accountability.

I think it's also a lesson in the arrogance of people in power and their willingness to spend school system money to cover up wrong doing.

I think it's highly likely that the married coaches will learn something about this behavior from their wives, too.

Nightclubbing in Monticello? Is Monticello like an undiscovered Vegas of sin and debauchery? I'd think you'd have a hard time finding a restaurant there that offered more that sporks for silverware.

A nightclub in MONTICELLO? Monticello, Arkansas? Who knew? The wildest place I've ever been there is the Sonic.

The Arkansas School Boards Association has never been know to support the FOI or student rights. Why the state requires school boards to support this organization, pay to be members, is beyond me. One of the monkey attorneys associated with the ASBA claims that no notification of regular board meetings is required even if it is requested by individuals or the press.

LOL, Whoscrumdown. Look at the time of our posts. Great minds and all that.

Thanks, Durango, but it could just be that similar minds think similarly.

The board only does what the supt. says to do. Odds on the supt. being a former coach or allied in some way with athletics?

Local patrons need to complain if district funds are used to pay these bills. They were caused by Board stupidity and the Board individually and personally need to pay them.

Monticello is like several other "dry" communities across the state. You can't buy beer or liquor in any store, but you can purchase it by the drink in a couple of private clubs.

As for the school board... Hopefully they will learn that public money + public employees = public information.

I didn't know there was anywhere to buy alcohol in Monticello...back in the late 70's you had to go to Dermot for liquor or you could buy beer in I believe the place was called Lacey??? Of course that was when they basically rolled up the sidewalks at 6PM...couldn't even go to the grocery store...you could go to a drive-in can't remember if it was Sonic or not but I DO remember they had speedbumps the size of small mountains and then the Wag-A-Bag convenience store.

A four-day paid vacation sure sounds like some kind of tough discipline, doesn't it? You can thank the teachers' union, the Arkansas Education Association, for that. Also for the fact that it is harder to get rid of a teacher than about any other state in the union.

Very few Arkansas teachers are union members and mainly in larger towns. Yes, it does take evidence to fire a teacher but that is what the principal is supposed to do. In my experience, most principals have no one to fault but themselves.

Actually it sounds like the Board doesn't want to get rid of anyone but the press who represent those who are paying the bills for the teachers. Note also that coaches usually get a supplement to their pay but teach fewer real classes than non-coach teachers.
