Lincoln: Boozman courts Wall Street

Posted by Max Brantley on Thu, Jul 1, 2010 at 1:47 PM

OK, then. the Blanche Lincoln re-election campaign gets to the point. Republican opponent John Boozman raked in big bucks courtesy of a hedge fund zillionaire right after voting against financial reform legislation that such hedge funders hate.

PS — Lincoln declined to note that her Arkansas Democratic colleagues, Marion Berry and Mike Ross, threw in with the Wall Street fat cats along with Boozman.

LINCOLN NEWS RELEASE

Congressman John Boozman collected tens of thousands of dollars for his campaign from a Manhattan fundraiser Wednesday night hosted by billionaire hedge fund founder Paul Singer and attended by Wall Street executives who stand to be major contributors. The fundraiser was held the same day that Boozman voted against pro-consumer reform legislation to hold Wall Street banks accountable.

"While Senator Blanche Lincoln is leading the fight to protect Arkansas consumers and small businesses by reining in the reckless investment practices of Wall Street banks that put our economy in the ditch, Congressman Boozman remains a guardian for the status quo," Lincoln campaign communications director Katie Laning Niebaum said. "This is a big difference between the top candidates for U.S. Senate. Senator Lincoln sees a problem and finds solutions that help Arkansas. Congressman Boozman sees a problem and blames Democrats. He has offered little response to the near-collapse of our financial system and it appears that his campaign is now being rewarded."

Paul Singer's Wall Street-based Elliott Management is one of the largest "vulture funds" in the world. Vulture funds are predatory investors that seek to profit off the debts of the world's poorest countries. They buy a nation's debt for pennies on the dollar and then sue the indebted country to win repayment of the initial debt's full value. [The Guardian, 3/10/2007; Associated Press, 5/22/07]. According to the firm's press releases and trade publications, two of the firm's main arms, Elliott International and Kensington International, are based in the "tax havens" of the Cayman Islands. [Elliott Associates release via BusinessWire, 6/4/2002; Banking Wire, 9/12/2006]. Vulture funds register in the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands to maintain secrecy. Paul Singer, who founded the hedge fun Elliott Associates and has become a major behind-the-scenes player in the the world of Republican fundraising, is hosting an event in Manhattan tonight for at least five U.S. Senate hopefuls, multiple sources said.

The candidates include California's Carly Fiorina, Washington's Dino Rossi, Florida's Marco Rubio, Arkansas' John Boozman, and Pennsylvania's Pat Toomey, the sources said.

I couldn't reach Singer to discuss the event, but it's expected to be large and send tens of thousands of dollars to each campaign.

It's nice to know Arkies will be treated to round upon round of Washington financed ads for
the Griffter and numerous rounds of ads for Boozman courtesy of NY financiers.

I just read "About John" on his website. Is that a joke? Seriously, because I laughed the whole time, and, if it's supposed to be funny, that guy has a bright, shiny future in comedy.

I think that all of you who support John Gray should vote for him in November. Don't compromise your principles and vote for Miss Blanche. Stick to your guns. John needs your votes. Vote Green! Vote for our man! Send Miss Blanche packing.

The bigger question is if Boobman left the room, would anyone really notice? I don't even think he has a shadow. Why send someone who won't use their brain for any purpose, even to keep their neck from getting dusty.

What's the damn difference between Boozman's fat cat Wall Streeters and Lincoln's fat cat corporate pimps? Terminal lung cancer vs terminal colon cancer? A boot on your neck....does the brand matter?

I will spend the next few months polishing my John Gray vote while Johnny Blanche eat each other alive. The debates will be the best part as Blanche repeats oddly 19th century sounding quotes from memory as Boozman mumbles something stupid under his breath. Ma Kettle vs Pa Kettle...maybe.

Neither have a good record to stand on, especially Boozman. But Bad Blanche can't crow too loudly with all the stinker votes she's cast that matches Boozman's bad votes one for one. No heroes in this match up.

Wouldn't it be funny if no one voted in November? Of course that won't happen, but there's not a damn thing to be fired up about. I don't buy the reported 30 point lead NOozman supposedly has over Bad Blanche at the moment, but if all the Republicans vote for Boozman, which they will and half the Democrats either don't vote or vote for Gray......Bad Blanche is up Shit Creek without a paddle. Bub-bye 2. 5 million dollar mansion in Virginia.

Actually Blanche's mansion is safe because next January she'll slide right into top lobbyist job without missing a beat. So this race is really between the Johns....Gray vs Boozman. Who woulda thought? Good John vs Bad John.

An easy choice for thinking voters, but the non-thinkers outnumber the thinkers in Arkansas 3 to 1. Senator Boozman does not have a nice ring to it, but we're gonna get what we deserve and 48th will be thy name to the end of time. dear old Arkansas. It's a pity.

DBI. Your comments last night and the night before were home runs. But tonight, I think you are wrong. I know you are mad about Blanche beating Bill, but before you vote, think. Would you really just as soon see a Republican as a Democrat in that seat?

You know when Blanche was running against your leftist hero you continuously put her down and said what a corporate clown she was. Now you paint her as a knight in shinning armor. Make up your mind!

Harvey....learn how to read goddamn it. I've got nothing good to say about Blanche Lincoln except to say that John Boozman is worse....and you have to work pretty damn hard to be a worst Senator than Blanche Lincoln.

And no ben....I can't go with you this time. If the neighbor only diddles your little daughter a little bit, less than the guy down the street, you don't excuse him. Blanche has been diddling us for almost 12 years. I personally don't care if Wide-stance Larry Craig takes her place or Osama himself. I am done with her, she's played us for fools long enough.

Maybe after 6 disastrous years with Senator Boozman, Arkansas voters will wake the FK up. John Gray will get 4 votes at my house.

I love the fact that John Gray is going to be in the race. Me? I'm supporting the Independent on the ballot, Trevor Drown. Personally, I'm a conservative and I know, this is generally a progressive blog, but I like reading it. To hell with this splitting the vote bs. If you don't vote your principles, you compromise your integrity. Btw DBI, great example about the diddler. We may not agree politically, but at least you have principles and won't compromise your integrity. These zombies that do will be the ones splitting the vote.

I'm with H.R. Trevor Drown is the only one in the race who won't be working for anyone other than the people of Arkansas since his whole campaign is being run & funded by volunteers and supporters. You may not agree with all of his views, but at least he won't be pushed around by the fat cats or anyone else from out of state!
