Jeannie Burlsworth, leader of Secure Arkansas, has posted this notice on the group's website about their anti-immigrant petition drive's failure. They claimed to have gathered 10,000 more signatures than they actually obtained by the deadline, well short of the minimum required by law.
Jeannie Burlsworth with Secure Arkansas responded, "We were informed we had 30 additional days, after the original count, in which to replace stricken signatures. Our attorneys will be exploring the matter Monday to advise us as to our possible options at this point. Apart from that outcome, several legislators have expresses their willingness to take this fight to the Arkansas Congress in January and potentially bring more punitive legislation for illegal / criminal immigrants. This fight is long from over."
Sorry, Jeannie, you don't get 30 days if you don't submit enough signatures in the first place. None of those you submitted were stricken. You just didn't have enough. The question remains: Can you count?
The desire for "punitive legislation" tells you everything you need to know about this group of bigots, who are on record as saying that the rising population of Hispanics in Arkansas (no reference to legal status) is a prime reason for their effort to target immigrants. Also, a note: being in the country without documents (or with lapsed documents) is not a crime, it is a status offense punishable by removal from the U.S.

I find the very term "illegal" to be demeaning and insulting, along the lines of n******.
For one thing, what did us legals do that was so upstanding and righteous and moral? Absolutely nothing, except get born. Yet that major accomplishment makes us better morally than our neighbor.
And another. Is there a person on this blog that hasn't taken part in the cash economy? We are ALL illegals, if we want to be fair about it (which we don't).
We did nothing to earn our citizenship, we break the law just as often as anyone else, but we're white, we need a racist word, and all the old ones are no longer tolerated.
"Illegal." It's the new n******. Use it today.
Roland - As a noun, it is demeaning. As an adjective, it depends on the context. In conversation, it would be useful to have a concise, non-demeaning term that is easier to use than "persons unlawfully present in the United States", so what would you suggest?
Me thinks Jeanie needs to re-read our Constitution, in particular Amendment 7.
Nothing will slow or deter these Haters.
Wonder how many signatures we could get on a petition drive to permanently remove Jeannie Burlsworthless and her ilk from Arkansas? Surely more than Insecure Arkansas got on theirs!
"Arkansas Congress"
hahahahahahahaha
What a bigoted loon....
Why is she so damn afraid of the Mexicans?
I'd like to know what legislators are willing to carry Burlsworth's dirty water? She can probably count on Fort Baptist's own Dimmy Altes whose gone on email record wishing to ship the black folks back to Africa. Who else belongs on the Shit List? Let these hatin members of the "Arkansas Congress" show themselves.
Hopefully her attorneys, Dumbass & Dumbasser will tell her on Monday her Hate Parade is over for this year and we can get back to important business. And let us keep in mind that also on Monday some Mexican, with papers or without will rise up around 4 am and head off to do 12 or 15 hours of honest hard work thereby doing more in one day than Burlsworth's will do in a year.
Immigrants are not here to take our jobs. No one wants the jobs these people are doing, none of us are willing to work for the low wages these people are getting. Yes, someday they will take our jobs, the jobs we want, because they're not dumb, and they learn fast, and they realize that when you enter at the very bottom of the ladder, a lot of folks will stand on your head for a while.
It's the age old pattern of immigrants coming to America. I've watched the Vietnamese go thru this process. I remember the horror stories of what these gooks were going to do once they were let out the gates. Of course none of the horror stories came true.
The Vietnamese refugees that came to Fort Chaffee in 1975 melded into our community and worked the awful jobs no one else wanted. In a few years their kids were at the top of every class and still are. I'm proud that my daughter's best friend Jenny Van will be going to MIT this fall on a full scholarship that she earned by being the smartest girl in every class she's ever entered.
The same thing will happen over the next decade with Hispanic students. One of the saddest things I've witnessed was the number of good Hispanic students who went to school with my kids who were given the bad news after their high school graduation, that they wouldn't be attending college because their families were in this country illegally.
So now instead of going to the U of A, they're washing dishes and mowing lawns as if they'd never gone to school at all. Talk about the sins of the father....talk about injustice...talk about a loss for all of Arkansas and America.
The best and cheapest insurance policy for our old age is the education of every kid that breathes our air. Jenny won't be breaking into your house to steal your TV. She won't be grabbing your purse at the mall. She won't be an Asian Duggar spitting out more kids than she can feed.
I'm happy to accept as my neighbor any human willing to work and follow the laws and learn our customs (some of which stink to high heaven). Where in the Bible does it say that we're only free to roam certain parts of the earth? Where in the Bible does it say to hate your neighbor?
I'd be happy to take up my sharp stick and escort Burlsworth's and those like her right over the state line. We don't need them.....they're poison, do not breath my air! The days of the dinosaurs are over. A pox on Jeannie Burlsworth and everyone like her. You're not wanted here. Scat!
Arkblog definition of bigotry is any one who wants the government to enforce the law on illegal immigration. Typical leftists.
Why do you need a term at all?
Do you agonize over not being able to use Cheat, Speeder and Idiot to describe the group of people who use cash to avoid paying taxes, drive over the speed limit or text while driving?
Or do you frequently use the terms Illegal Income Hider, Illegal Driver and Illegal iPhone User to describe these common groups of people?
No, there's only one group who does illegal things that you feel the need to segregate with a term all their own, which tell us a lot about your mental map.
Harvey's great-great-great-grandfather:
"Arkblog definition of bigotry is any one who wants the government to enforce the law on returning slaves to their owners. Typical leftists."
The "Arkansas Congress" phrase should let people know the what type of leadership Secure Arkansas has. Also, the "someone told me it was so" defense rarely works. It's probably better just to follow the rules for submitting signatures.
Roland,
While I do not support the Secure Arkansas group or the Arizona alien detention and interogation statute or other illegal aliens pogroms, I am curious. Why is the term "illegal immigrant" or "illegal alien" so pejorative to you. Is it the actual combination of the those words to describe someone who has entered or remains or resides in this country illegally? or Is it the connotation from usage by groups like Secure Arkansas etc?
Roland,
Sorry, your 1:43 post makes it clear. Sorry, I missed it.
I'm getting too used to skipping troll posts and miss some I shouldn't.
I m curious, upon reflection and thought. What is the term for an immigrant or an alien that has entered or remains or resides in the United States in violation of of immigration regulations or visa limitations?
DBI, I appreciate your first-hand testimony from the Ft. Smith area about the positive effect many of the Vietnamese who came to that region in the 1970s had on the region. That's been my experience, too, as I interact with some of the Vietnamese families who came to Arkansas and Louisiana in the latter decades of the 20th century.
And almost every Mexican and Central-Latin American immigrant I know or observe is hard-working, with strong family values. I know a number of people in the restaurant business in central Arkansas who tell me they would hire any of those folks they can find, because of their strong work ethic, their ability to handle tasks without constant supervision, their willingness to do work not assigned to them, and their vigilance about keeping the kitchen and restaurant clean.
I've watched in my own neighborhood as crews of Hispanic men work from dawn until past dark to cut up trees when weather causes trees to be downed--work no one else evidently wants to do. Without those same Hispanic workers tending to our streets, I don't know what we'd do.
These folks bring invaluable gifts to our community, and we only shoot ourselves in the feet when we try to make them unwelcome--which is the entire game plan of Secure Arkansas. And, sadly, all for political gain for the Republican party.
The term 'illegal alien' is what is used in our immigration laws.
Seriously, is someone really upset over the use of "illegal"? HOLY CRAP! Get to substance, you burned-out hippie! This is why liberals get bogged down so much and seem out of touch by a whole lot of voters. I know that proper terms are needed, but call a person who is here illegally... an "illegal." It describes their immigration status, not a reflection of their personality.
Please, they are 'undocumented' workers! We simply must be sensitive to these matters. We don't want to offend them. They might go back home where they came from.
Oh Harv-stranglove. Why don't you just admit you'd like to shoot every Mexican you see? Wouldn't you just love an open season on anyone who isn't white and Republican?
I'm sure when you say wetback, you're having a kind day. Do you realize that there are people in Arkansas who feel towards you the same way you feel towards Hispanics?
I could gather up plenty of signatures to deport you back to Nazi Germany where you belong. You're just sad.
History has shown that the Yippies were right
By controlling the language the discourse is corrupted.
From US Legal Definitions (http://definitions.uslegal.com/i/illegal-i…
The main legislation governing immigration is the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, (INA).For INA purposes, an "alien" is any person who is not a citizen or a national of the United States. There are different categories of aliens: resident and nonresident, immigrant and nonimmigrant, documented and undocumented ("illegal").

A few Sundays ago I watched commentators on Fox News Sunday scratch their heads over the claim that Arizona's law had racial implications. Why the law says right there in black and white, they scoffed, "no racial profiling allowed."
And it's true the law says law enforcement must not make the initial contact on the basis of a racial profile -- there must be some independent lawful basis for the contact. Aside from whether that requirement is an effective barrier to profiling, these folks seem to be overlooking the second-tier profiling: after a lawful stop, which persons are required to produce proof of legal residence and which are not. I'm sure there is not a bit of racial profiling in that decision.
Seems to me Arizona should say, "Yes. We use racial profiling. We thought we could trick the world with that 'no racial profiling' language, but let's face it -- we all know it's those brown folks we're after. Got a problem with that?"
Or, if Arizona really thinks racial profiling is bad (and it must be -- the statute "forbids" it), the law could say:
1. *Every* person within the boundaries of the state who is subject to a lawful stop must present proof of legal residency in the United States;
2. A valid Arizona driver's license creates a presumption of legal residency;
3. *Every* person who has a license from another state, or no license, must present additional proof of legal residency.
But I guess that would put undue burdens on legal residents. Especially white ones. Not that it's much of a big deal to put undue burdens on brown legal residents. That's what they get for being brown. Anyway, the statute forbids racial profiling.
What I would like to see is every American expecting people in this country to obey the law equally instead of giving special privileges to some because of their skin color or ethnic origin.
You're right, Harvey! Why should white people get a pass on having to show documentation when stopped by Arizona law enforcement? They could be illegals from Norway! Make every single person stopped present papers -- no "special privileges to some because of their skin color or ethnic orgin!" I'm with you on this. I wish the Arizona legislature were with you and me.
I'm no racist -- make black people show documentation, too. When I'm passing through Arizona with my mom and pop the authorities have no way of knowing we're not illegals from one of those Carribean nations, or Somalia or somewhere. No special privileges -- make me show documentation, too.
You people are exactly what is wrong in America. We are told to just simply accept what our so called leaders tell us to and do most of the time. If we try to correct the problem we are called racist or bigot. I don't think all are. The problems with the Illegal population are many. Just try to get into an emergency room just about any time of the day. They use this as every day medical insurance. Who pays for that? Look at our schools. We have to expand or even build new schools just to keep up with the exploding population of the anchor babies born here. Most of the kids brought here can't speak english which causes even more problems in the school. Most work for substandard wages and most work for cash. That causes two problems. First it drives down wages. Second it causes lost taxes. Please poeple reach down and back behind you, get a firm grip and pull your head out!!!
