Lightning-sparked fire: Total loss

Cleaning up missed mail from my week in New York, I came across this photo from John Robinson of the National Weather Service. It shows the remains of a house west of Cushman in Independence County burned by a lightning-caused fire Thursday night.

Salesman in Shoffner probe resigns from securities firm

Steele Stephens, the securities salesman whose large share of state Treasurer Martha Shoffner's state bond investments triggered a federal investigation that led to a criminal charge against her, yesterday submitted a resignation by fax to his employer, St. Bernard Financial Services, based in Russellville.

Before last Friday night, the saddest, most "depressing" Depression-era story I had read was Horace McCoy's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" However, after watching The Arkansas Repertory Theatre's opening performance of William Inge's "A Loss of Roses," I can attest that this play is as rough and unflinching as that Depression-era tale, or any other.
