The Clintons Chelsea Clinton's wedding day UPDATE

- THE COUPLE: Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky at a party for them earlier this year.
Interesting. Nothing, after a number of catty runup articles, in the New York Times today on Chelsea Clinton's wedding to Marc Mezvinsky this evening at an estate within commuting distance of New York City.
The Washington Post on the other hand blows it out. Speculation on the guest list. A roundup of headlines. A promise of "continuing coverage" on the gossip blog. Twitter chatter galore of course (trending snarky).
My own evening plans include dinner about halfway between Gravel Ridge and Otto — heirloom tomatoes from farmer Al Leveritt will be the headliner, along with pork smoked by pit virtuoso David Koon.
UPDATE: As guests begin to surface, names emerged. There was a rehearsal dinner for the wedding party last night, but also a cocktail party at the hotel where Bill and Hillary Clinton are staying for all wedding guests who are scattered in lodgings ranging from quaint B&Bs to a Hampton Inn in Poughkeepsie. Marie Clinton Bruno of Little Rock talked to the NY Times, remembering Chelsea's role as a bridesmaid in her wedding to Gio. Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen turned up, too. Bill Clinton lunched with brother Roger. I'd love to know how the NY Times reporter concluded that the throng of young people in attendance (imagine, Chelsea and Marc asked THEIR friends to the wedding) were a mix of Arkansas and the hedge fund world. Perhaps some were barefoot. Hint to NY Times: Some people may be natives of Arkansas AND work at hedge funds. Ask around.
The vast majority of guests looked to be in their late 20s or 30s, perhaps college and work friends of the bride and groom. Perhaps they will be celebrities some day, but for now they can rest comfortably in their anonymity. They seemed to be a mixture of Arkansas and the hedge-fund world. One blonde in a ballooning yellow dress walked across the street to the gawkfest and took pictures of the locals, then had her picture taken with them, then posed with a bemused and very patient state trooper.“We don’t know who we’re looking at,” one bystander complained. “My God, they all look like they’re in their 20s. They’re kids! Seriously, I want to see Oprah.”
PS — Lots of web comments on the caftan Hillary Clinton wore Friday night. Says here, by the way, that the $3 million tabloid wedding figure is way off.

Yummy, Max! Alan's tomatoes are impressive! I had some last week at a local watering hole that didn't charge us or call the police for the birthday cake we brought in! Okay did anyone read the editorial in today's daily about Browning's? The author acknowledged the blogosphere and its comments about said establishment. Could it be that Paul Greenberg is a troll on here?! Perhaps Harvey?
I'm curious about something. From the left wing perspective how do you reconcile spending $3 million on a wedding and grieving for the poor? Shouldn't you defer that expense and give it to the poor and have a cheaper wedding? Wouldn't that be the liberal thing to do?
What do you mean they can afford both? That is $3million dollars that will NOT go to the poor. How can you rationalize that? If a conservative does it you are indignant but if a liberal does it you say it is ok. Can't you see the hypocricy? The clintons would not give their own money to the poor. They would want the taxpayers to do it. Liberals are always generous with other people's money. You all know that.
Yeah Harvey, they should've just gone down to the JP and hopped in the car for a honeymoon at Hot Springs; and sent that $3 M to ACORN or the ACLU or NAACP. That would be far preferable to spending it on a losing proposition in Afghanistan, Iraq or Harvey's wet dream - Iran.

As a Dem I see the point Harvey is trying to make.....just because you have it...does not mean you should flaunt it...which seems to be your interpretation...the kids know better but their folks don't....the grandchildren will all be having their weddings out in the back forty eating Alan's tomatoes.
I expected you to justify their actions only because of who they are. If it had been a conservative you would have vilified their actions. What hypocrites! They are as royal as my big toe! It must be nice to parade around as a friend of the poor as long as those poor don't inconvenience your own life.

1. Who knows the precise amount the Clinton's are spending on Chelsea's wedding?
2. Who knows the precise amount of their personal funds the Clinton's have donated to charitable causes--"the poor"?
3. Precisely how much have the critical bloggers on this site contributed to the welfare of "the poor"?
4. Is your concern for the poor, or for an issue to use for criticism of someone else?

When conservatives, i.e. the mega-millionaires, spend countless thousands or millions on weddings, birthday parties, Christmas parties, vacations, multiple homes, airplanes, frequent travel, never a single word of criticism is voiced by a liberal. It's their money, they're free to do with it as they please.
6. Conservatives consistently oppose efforts and programs to assist the poor; just check Republicans' voting records on health care, extension of unemployment benefits, Social Security, etc., etc., etc. Every effort to assist the poor is met with rigid resistance by Republicans.
7. Republicans don't seem to mind using tax-payers money to bail out big banks and insurance companies.
8. Republicans don't seem to mind tax reductions for those with ultra-high incomes. They wouldn't want any of THEIR tax money to be channeled to assisting the poor.
9. How is it that conservatives suddenly become concerned with the plight of the poor the very moment a Democrat spends money on a wedding like a Republican? Where was all that conservative concern for the poor last week?!

The clintons are a pathetic example of how far the American culture has sunk if they represent 'royalty'. JFK and Jacqueline were probably aptly labeled American 'royalty' if that term means anything but the redneck clintons are hardly in the same category. Bill has redneck roots and hillary came from middle class Chicago. Hardly the origins for anything 'royal'.

I don't really know if any of them give a penny to charity. It's NONE of my business. But Harv would imply that all rich folks should give the majority of their money to the poor. While I'm happy when I hear that someone rich has given money to the needy around us, what I think about someone else's money shouldn't be spoken or blogged about...it is NONE of my business. What's missing from Chelsea in that gorgeous wedding rehearsal dress is a bun in the oven, a methed-up future mother-in-law. Wait, they're getting married, not running for V-P.
Any information I have ever read on the topic of charity suggests poor and middle income folks make charitable contributions ***as a percentage of income far*** above the wealthy.
And we certainly know that's true when it comes to taxation.

Do you characterize everyone who is critical as 'jealous'? Funny but clinton always did that for critics of his presidency. I have NEVER heard a president use that term when being critical of those who disagreed with his administration. He was the first. Interesting!

I have said it several times but I will say it again just to get through. I object to people who wrap their robes of left wing self righteousness around them and criticize the government because it doesn't give enough money to the poor and yet have no qualms about spending excesses on themselves. Liberals have no problem spending the tax payers money but they are usually pretty selfish when it comes to spending their own money on the poor.
Several years ago I read an analysis of who gives to charitable organizations. The middle class gave a disproportionate large share of their income to charities. The rich were the lowest givers proportionate to their income. That struck me as curious considering who gets all of the attention.

Well, the defense department is pumping a lot of money into the economies of Iraq and Afghanistan. A lot of poor folks have jobs and money because of that. Is that ok with you?
Harvey, war is the Republican stimulus plan. Just look at where a lot of the plants are located. Those companies can certainly afford to give to their favorite representative and senator from all of those no-bid contracts that guarantee excessive profits. And if you guessimated low, hell just raise the price like on the Osprey and the new fighter. Uncle has a lot of money. And the more they get, the more they give. No wonder we can't get useless programs killed off, even with the Defense Department says they aren't needed. A senator from SC, AL, or GA knows more about future war needs than any admiral or 4-star general.

if the wedding guest list had been filled wtih her parents' friends, they would have Lord only knows how many Secret Service men working the wedding. I figured they would have the sense to do it this way.
