I gather Mayor Mark Stodola thinks our report on his first term as "strong mayor" wasn't sufficiently worshipful. He particularly objects to failure to include favorable mentions of Little Rock in various national ratings (some with tenuous connections at best to city leadership and some, such as cheap prices, that are counter-indicative of growth and prosperity).
So read on for his upbeat assessment of a city battling budget woes with depleted city staff. (He did omit that recent Moody's report that said Little Rock could be cruising for a double-dip recession.)
He also didn't highlight the marvelous job the city has done converting its lost minor league baseball franchise to a sparkling new park oasis.

MAYOR MARK STODOLA'S E-MAIL
The City We Live In
As has been reported in the news, the City of Little Rock’s general fund has had to be constrained this year due to declining sales tax receipts and franchise fees. Like many businesses in our city, we have had to tighten our belt while we push through this economic recession.
However, there are some in the city who take our belt-tightening as a sign that Little Rock is losing ground. I choose a different perspective.
As residents of Little Rock, we’ve all known for long time what a great community Little Rock is to live, work and play. Thanks to our diverse economy that is rich in service, manufacturing and technology sectors, Little Rock has been fortunate to maintain a low unemployment rate throughout the national economic recession. While much of the country is experiencing a serious housing collapse, Little Rock has maintained a relatively stable, affordable housing market. Our cultural institutions like the Clinton Presidential Center and the Central High National Historic Site among others continue to bring visitors to our city and our restaurants continue to thrive.
As evidenced by the recognition we have received over the past year from “outsiders” who don’t live here, it is apparent others are taking positive notice that Little Rock is poised to become not just a “good” city to live in but a great city to live in.
Consider the following:
Little Rock named the fourth-strongest metropolitan economy in the United States
Brookings Institute, October 2009

I think you will agree with me, people from around the country are taking notice that Little Rock is moving forward. As the economy continues to slowly improve, I want to engage you in a dialogue about where we are going as a city and what we want our City to be. Please let me know your thoughts as we progress. You can contact me at mayor@littlerock.org.

Pitiful.
But so many Historic Arkansas institutions have gone to hell either by neglect or apathy. The Little Rock metro has lost two AM radio frequencies (1010, 1150) in the past 20 years and a third (KAAY 1090)--once a source of pride for Little Rock is third-rate dollar a holler religious broadcaster that is barely audible in Star City at night covered up in "HD Radio"/IBOC hiss from adjacent Dallas and Cleveland 50KW AM'ers.
And don't even get me started on the historic Saenger Theater in Pine Bluff AR. There was a push to get that restored but things stalled 10-15 years ago.
Anyone still talking about double dips instead of using the word Depression honestly.. is a liar and a con.
We already have 42 million citizens in a modern soup line (food stamps). We have 20 million in need of work. Millions more in need of more work or work which pays enough to keep out of the soup line at the end of a work day.
Anyone willing to promote a health insurance and pharma looting spree bill which raised the highest costs in the world by a trillion or more while still being the only developed nation in the world who leaves tens of millions without care deserves the government and both major parties we have.
Any Mayor in America today who doesn't scream bloody murder over public monies feeding the likes of the Chamber of Commerce deserves the sack.
That is a sad, pathetic list of "accomplishments". Everyone knows these Top Ten and Bottom Ten lists are just vapid headlines and internet articles with no real meat or meaning to them, be they good , bad or indifferent. If he cannot come up with his own lists of why Little Rock is great, bring on the Hemp Wearing Dope Smoker Candidate! Then we could make another list...Top Ten Cities to Toot with The Mayor!
And why isn't the mayor demanding the state fair remain in his fair capital city? If he is, it's no very loud.
He is evaluating whether UAMS could use the state fairgrounds for parking, or if Flake & Company could build "Hall of Industry Condos" or if there is a "Top Ten Former Fairgrounds Cities" list.
Does he remind you just a bit of Slim Pickens in Dr. Stangelove; a freeloader riding a city in decline to the ground?
Everything is PR, buzz, spin, deception these days. Reality is reserved for TV and, then only after it has been touched up a bit. The city fathers and movers and shakers set this course 40 year ago. They have shown no willingness to change course.
Maybe losing your minor league baseball franchise will save you. Up here in Chickenopolis minor league baseball was seen by our taxpayer-funded Chamber of Cowbirds as the sure-fire way for a hot new city expansion. The Chamber boz and some land owners tied high hopes on the minor league stadium being the path to prosperity for sales tax renewal after they sat on their over-paid asses and let Jesus Jim Holt destroy any chance of keeping Sam's Club in the city with a liquor permit.
So, they hyped the minor league stadium to the point that a city of 69,000 approved it by 13 votes. Naturally SOCIALISM is good for the Chamber so the 13 vote margin got us a TAX INCREASE which was used to pay for a minor league stadium.
And now what? The famed prosperity of a new stadium and ensuing retail mecca never happened. Chickenopolis patrons learned, via a stadium supporter, THE MORON NEWS, that the stadium was rented out to a franchise so cheaply that it wouldn't even pay for itself. Not even a break-even. Ain't that a hoot.
Now what? Chickenopolis Muncipal Bonds are being downgraded due to ever consistent declines in tax revenues.

So the sweet smell of having deodorant in the armpit of the Chamber has now turned kinda stinky. Will they ever learn? Nay.
But do not be dismayed. Our mayor is, like Goldman Sachs, doing God's work cause he goes to work every day doing what god wants him to do. Hey, it worked for Goldman Sachs so maybe we can grow rich by doing what god wants us to do. All we need is our own Geithner and Paulson.

A couple of years ago I wrote about going to a convention in Arlington TX which had been conned into committing hundreds of millions on that new Cowboy stadium for Jerry Jones which would replace what the "makers and shakers" felt were an unacceptable number of Hispanic groceries and garages with so many fine restaurants and upscale places that the taxes would cover the committment. I haven't been back, since I have an issue with that Texas attitude, but the stadium was just sitting there, down from the old stadium and the arena and Six Flags and the one hotel I was in and a Denny's around the corner. The Chamber is really good at this corporate "socialism".
that hurts. I've had so much fun at Ray Winder Field. What, you jerks cant even mow the damn grass??? Ray Winder Field was an institution! I dont know if it couldnt break even or not, but it was one of my favorite activities when I lived in little rock. Unfortunately for me, the zoo was on my list, too.
NEWS FLASH FOR MAYOR STODGY STODOLA: Just because Little Rock gets a favorable mention or a top-ten spot in some magazine article or survey or Lord knows what these things are, that dont feed the bulldog. Someone sure does have a lot of time on his hands to read magazines and surveys. They dont put money in the bank or meet payrolls.
Maybe he doesnt want the state fair in his fair city because, well, you know.......its not really HIS KIND OF PEOPLE who usually come to the fair regularly. And if there's something he could do to help promote the fair, like he helped promote Ray Winder and our zoo, maybe he should do that.
Mayor sad stodola and that Hurst whoever wanna be, has done nothing in the black community, and everytime any black business owners try to go before the planning commission or the litte rock city board, you can best believe all of those white board members already got their mind made up if they are going to zone your business or not, especially if your trying to open a business in the hillcrest, heights area, they are going to railroad you, the neighbors are going judge you, call the police on you at your own house to tell the police your working out of your house, ok I just moved in people.
I am very disappointed in our so called mostly white city board members and that rude unprofessional mayor, as I watch the board meetings each and watch how disrespect ful your are to Erma Hendrix and to the public, because we are watching mayor, makes me wonder why I voted for such a asshole, how can you even let something come out your mouth that your for minority businesses, but everytime a black person comes before those boards you and your mostly white board members all team up and vote No! Oh!! Especially if it's in the hillcrest, heights area, but you sat there and heard all the racial profiling and all the discriminating things that was said by these racist neighbors, need I remind you, if she put here business there it going to increase crime and traffic, remember that mayor?
Well I remember all of that BS in 2007 and people I want you to know I'm still living this discriminating BS in 2010, it's been a living hell, all because the city do not want black business owners in the hillcrest, heights area so you take my business license to keep me from having a business in hillcrest knowing I have been in this area for 18 years and have never brought crime an increased triffic, (racial profiling ) discrimination!
I worked just as hard for my business license as these all white business owners in the hillcrest, heights area, vote, pay taxes, by the way I started my own business with my own money I saved, because these banks make it hard for black business owners to get a loan, I give back to the community just as they do, so why am I being told no you can't have your business in hillcrest on my private property and these white business owner in hillcrest, heights area are being voted in yes! Bob and Jane we got your back welcome to the hillcrest, heights area! That's hillcrest, heights area for ya! But my small business of 18 years will chip away the fabric of the residential neighborhood, but it's business all up and down van buren st.
But remember being told no! But months later those same mostly white board members vote yes to a white business owner, wait it was like four more in 2007, but because I'm a double minority going through the same process (short form PCD) same area, I complied also, I was denied and was forced to go to the board (4) times, while these all white business owners went to board one time. Don't believe me, I got each video wanna see how low down they treated me. Kmensie@yahoo.com
To clarify - today's (10 Feb 2012) State Hospital report shows a lot of improvement.
That State Hospital progress report really does show substantial improvement.
Offal, I will take my little farm over Chumpabee any day. There is also that…
