It's a business, as any sports fan knows. The news release doesn't mention buyout terms, but Twitter feeds say he'll get his $1.8 million at $50,000 per month for three years, unless hired elsewhere. Athletic Director Jeff Long's boilerplate:
After a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our men's basketball program, including an assessment of the overall student-athlete experience within our program, it is clear that we have not made the progress over the last four years that is necessary to return Razorback Basketball to a place of national relevance." Long said. "As a program, our initial goals are to challenge for Southeastern Conference championships, compete in the NCAA Tournament and support our student-athletes in the pursuit of a degree. Our program's tradition demonstrates those goals are certainly attainable at the University of Arkansas."I want to thank John and his staff for their hard work and dedication to the Razorback program. I am appreciative of their efforts on behalf of the University of Arkansas."
There's a 6 p.m. news conference; TV will go live, undoubtedly (7 for sure). Mike Anderson and Marquette's Buzz Williams are getting mentions.

From Pelphrey's early days I had high hopes for him. On lay overs in airports sports bars as groups asked the obvious "where you from?" multiple Louisville fans and alums would tell me we got a jewel, pay him well or treat him right or we will snatch him right out from under you.
I had high hopes.
Then...,
The player defections and suspensions and transfers and such and I tried to read between the lines. Maybe a rough patch in the 2nd season would be all it was, but..... it just kept on coming and coming.
So and so, suspended till further notice, so and so not practicing with the team... so and so not on roster for next game....
I wish him luck since many that knew him say he is a quality person, but maybe not every good coach is a good person nor ever good person is a good coach.
Maybe it was a poor fit or maybe something else.
Please remind those who place sports rather down on the list below education why we're to care.
Thank you.
Hear, hear Norma! I'm over college sports. Huge sums of money are made off of the students athletes and it compensates everyone but the athlete. And, yes, I know they get a scholarship, but when you compare that to the amount of money generated off them, it's peanuts. After handslapping Auburn and Ohio State this year, the NCAA is a joke. It went from archaic to obsolete in one year.
At least in pro sports no one is deluding themselves about the purpose of the game....money!
Norma,
For entertainmnet some enjoy movies, some enjoy theatre, some enjoy live music, some enjoy church, some enjoy libraries, some enjoy playing sports while others enjoy watching sports.
When some enjoy to discuss the tragedy of the 42 year old drug overdose of an actress back in the 50's others enjoy discussing how Tiger Woods' downfall may preserve Arnold Palmer's lifetime acheivement record of 18 major golf tournaments.
Me, I don't care what others enjoy as a diversion from their normal day, but I try not to be too dismissive, it is rude.
Some at the club just are fanatics about tennis, it doesn't do it for me but it does keep the crowds down at other club attractions.
Citizen1, actually it wasn't Arnold the Palmer but Jack the Nicklaus who won 18 majors golf tournaments.
In more classical terms that diversion is called an opiate of the masses, something to keep the proletariat turning the wheels of capitalism regardless of who or what is ground up in the gears. Can't have people paying too much attention to anything of significance.
Well, Citizen, I don't care about any of that, including "rude."
None of those things, WHEN DISCUSSING EDUCATIONS, help anybody earn a living, establish a family or security, except for a rare few genetically endowed jocks whose career exceptions prove the rule.
Stephen Hawking. There's somebody whose contributions to humanity I admire.
Can't move, speak or get outta the wheelchair, much less score a field goal.
Takes all kinds, I guess.
Sound,
I believe you are right. Did I get 18 correct?
Golf and fishing never did it for me either, too slow paced. At least tennis had the active thing going for it.
Also, I had thought it was religion which was the opiate of the masses. Plus religion gave the additional benefit of having the masses not come take away the rich's riches when they saw the poor starving in the streets. Instead, blame the poor for their predicamant.
Just yesterday listening to the American Family network some preacher was going on and on about his work punishing the immigrants and trying to starve them out so they would go back to where ever they had come from and seemlessly go into his doing job of saving people for Jesus.
If it makes you feel better Norma, not all of us are interested in what you think. If you don't like sports, avoid the sports blogs. As a person of "educations", one would think you could figure this out on your own.
"None of those things, WHEN DISCUSSING EDUCATIONS, help anybody earn a living, establish a family or security, except for a rare few genetically endowed jocks whose career exceptions prove the rule."
This is a thread about Razorbacks basketball. IF you don't like it, don't post. No need to be a troll intending on starting an argument regarding sports vs. education. Coach John Pelphrey was canned and gets paid. Pretty simple headline.
Pel was allegedly a class act, but a poor choice for the razorback program as a coach.
So when attendance dips at the UA professional basketball games, does the money grubbing UA ever think that perhaps they should increase the number of tickets allocated for students?
The University of Arkansas is supposed to be a SCHOOL, not a sports franchise. Right? Just a civil question.
Why are we to care?
Why not post "why are we to care" after any entry, that way you can always be juvenile and super-trollesque?
I have to disagree with you Durango. They weren't pathetic papers. They were quintessential local…
“Conviction or no conviction, Thompson has paid a heavy price in publicity alone.”
Undeniably…
