Little Rock: A dangerous city

Our leaders keep telling us that Little Rock is getting safer and safer — even as our police force shrinks on account of lack of financial support. And even as neighborhoods have become a virtual mugamatic for car and home burglaries and street robberies to feed the daily needs of the professional working criminal class.

Better for the city to toughen up the reporting and admit we need more cops. Pass a tax by saying we need to do something about LR turning up on a list of the 10 most dangerous cities in America.

    Kenton Buckner, currently the assistant police chief in Louisville, Ky., is going to be Little Rock's next police chief. The official announcement came about an hour after we were tipped to the news. Buckner goes to work June 30 on City Manager Bruce Moore's belief that he'll excel at "citizen engagement." /more/

    The indispensable Log Cabin Democrat police beat details an encounter between a cop and a beer-swilling man in a park who reportedly was hanging out, maybe nude, but at least with his genitals hanging out of very short shorts. He said his actions were acceptable where he came from. /more/

    Lt. Sidney Allen, spokesman for the Little Rock Police Department, reports another homicide today on Longcoy St., the 10th death investigated as a homicide in the city so far in April. UPDATE: An arrest has been made. /more/
  • LRPD: three wounded in Baseline car wash shootout

    The Little Rock Police Department says that a shootout at the Splash carwash on Baseline Rd. has left three wounded, with one in critical condition. Police say that around 4 p.m. Friday, a suspect went to the car wash at 8020 Baseline Rd, where he encountered two people who he'd previously had an unspecified "disturbance" with. Police said the man pulled a handgun and began firing at the two, who pulled out handguns of their own and returned fire. All three were wounded in the ensuing shootout /more/
  • LRPD: Homicide last night, sixth in LR in past seven days

    The Little Rock Police Department is seeking a man they say killed a 20-year-old at an apartment complex on North Bryant Street last night. The killing was the fifth homicide in Little Rock in the past seven days. Officers responded to the Park Heights Apartments at 1701 N. Bryant Street last night around 7:30 p.m. in response to a call about a person shot in the complex. On arrival, officers found Bernard Sherrod, 20, lying in the grass near an apartment building, with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. Sherrod was transported by ambulance to UAMS, where he was pronounced dead. /more/

    The Little Rock Police Department has issued an incident report detailing information about this morning's homicide at 224 E. 7th Street in which a woman allegedly stabbed her husband before attempting suicide by slashing her wrists. Police identified the victim as Kenneth Patterson, 61, and have identified Marilyn Patterson, 61, as a suspect in the crime. /more/
  • LRPD: Arrest made in murder of LRSD employee

    The Little Rock Police Department announced this evening that they have made an arrest in the murder of Debbie Bush, 56, a Little Rock School District employee found dead in her Tatum Street home on Tuesday. Police say they have arrested Joe Wicker, 40, in the crime. After being interviewed by police detectives, police said, he was arrested and charged with Capital Murder. No word yet the connection between Bush and Wicker, if any. /more/

  • Missing New Mexico girl found in Fort Smith

    A 14-year-old girl who went missing in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March has been found in Fort Smith, with police saying she was in the company of a 26-year-old man who met online. Investigators with the U.S. Marshals Service followed a tip that Lacey DeWitt, 15, might be at a Target store at 4001 Phoenix Ave. in Fort Smith. Police found her there in the parking lot around 1:30 yesterday afternoon in the company of a New Jersey man named Robert Butler, 26. /more/
  • POLICE: Downtown Bank of America robbed this morning

    The Bank of America on Capitol Avenue was robbed this morning around 9:30 a.m. The bank is on the ground floor of the Bank of America building at 200 W. Capitol. Police are on the scene, and LRPD spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen says detectives are looking at surveillance video to get a better description of the perpetrator. /more/
