The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board today upheld the director's rejection of an application by Juanita's restaurant for a private club permit that would have allowed it to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. at its River Market location. We got the news from one of those in the neighborhood who opposed the application.

Fine with me. Other than in bed at my casa, the only place you'll find me at 5 a.m. is at IHOP or the Waffle House.
So I guess all the non 8 to 5 workers should only drink while on duty then CCB?
I had a portion of my working career leaving work at 2 am so CCB has decided I have "more problems" than a worker off work at 5 pm having a second beer at 7 pm.
Let's tell all those police, nurse/doctor, 24hr convenience store workers, 24hr Walmart workers, office cleaners, etc etc etc.... that get off work at a time that CCB thinks is problematic that we have decided for their own good we will limit their rights that normal working schedule citizens enjoy.
Well, there goes the free market in LR, gone to gubmint control.
Since LR police don't respond to drunk drivers' hit and run accidents what difference would it make?
Me thinks the denial of the permit has more to do with the muscle flexing done by those establishments who already have the 5 am permits than the gubmint. I hear that they lobby the board pretty hard to keep their grip on their post 2 am monopoly.

thanks quando. It's the usual path of monopolies. One must admire the tactics Ark liquor wholesalers have used to seduce Arkies into accepting their monopoly control over liquor distribution in this state.
Naturally, churches have played a great hand in maintaining monopoly control in liquor wholesale bidness.
You can't help but wonder which churches get the biggest rewards from the monopolists? However, I would not hesitate to wager that key legies get better rewards than churches.

As eLwood pointed out, there is no free market in liquor sales in Arkansas. The ABC is probably the most susceptible Board that we have in Arkansas for favoritism, and political and economic control. At one time, if you wanted to get a liquor permit in Northwest Arkansas, there was only one attorney who could get it for you.
When I lived in MS, the story was that every anti-drinking march would be led by the local minister and the local bootlegger.
The other story was that if the circular driveway for a house went around to the back door, you had found a bootlegger.
I couldn't agree more! But the flavor I love the most is Death by Chocolate!…
I think about this print stuff a lot and believe I see the future though…
It is indeed sad to see the Times-Picayune in such a reduced state. The depressing…
