The race to the bottom: Romney in the lead

Posted by Max Brantley on Tue, Nov 15, 2011 at 3:43 PM

How bad is Mitt Romney? New polling shows President Obama ahead of Mitt Romney.

And then there's the Navy veteran, a Occupy South Carolina protester, booted from a Romney rally for wearing a T-shirt objecting to Romney's idea to privatize veterans benefits.

And really, Talking Points Memo asks, what could go wrong with the latest candidate boomlet — for Newt Gingrich. Baggage? Newt Gingrich? His middle name ought to be Samsonite.

Time to draft Huck.

  • Election day noodling, where Obama got his votes

    May 24, 2012
President Obama got 58 percent of the vote in Arkansas and, I think I remember correctly, carried a majority of the counties. /more/
  • Lyons: Corporations cry foul

    May 23, 2012
Corporations are people too, and people get their feelings hurt. What's more, the richer they are these days, the more sensitive they seem to be. It's reminiscent of that Hans Christian Anderson story of the "Princess and the Pea." You know, where the tender young virgin is so delicate that a single pea hidden under seven feather mattresses keeps her awake all night. That's how the prince satisfies himself that she's a real aristocrat. /more/
  • Arkansas presidential election results here

    May 22, 2012
The secretary of state has started posting returns. Too early to mean anything, but I'll take comfort that, in the first tally, Barack Obama has 66 percent of the vote, despite an avalanche for free publicity for crank candidate John Wolfe. /more/
  • The president whose name dare not be spoken

    May 22, 2012
Ernie Dumas writes this week about Mitt Romney's dilemma — how, really, can he avoid mentioning George Bush, whose policies put the country into an econommic free-fall? /more/
  • Does a massacre matter in Arkansas Romney vote?

    May 21, 2012
The Washington Post had retold a well-known piece of Arkansas history — the 1857 slaughter of an Arkansas wagon train by Mormon militia in what's become known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. /more/
  • Get on the Ron Paul bandwagon

    May 21, 2012
Noted: Backers of Ron Paul, the Republican presidential candidate, bought a quarter-page ad in today's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette encouraging votes for him in Tuesday's Arkansas presidential primary. /more/
  • Let the eagle soar

    May 18, 2012
Another week done. Final words: * NO CONFIDENCE: The unions that once represented employees in the Pulaski County School District have voted unanimously a "no confidence" statement on Superintendent Jerry Guess and Arkansas Education Director Tom Kimbrell for busting their unions. /more/
  • Why hasn't Mark Martin thought of this?

    May 18, 2012
Arizona secretary of state is thinking of barring Barack Obama from the ballot because he's not convinced he's U.S.-born. /more/
  • There's no media like free media

    May 18, 2012
As I figured last night, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette this morning for the third time gave page one attention in the state's largest news outlet to a fringe presidential candidate, John Wolfe. /more/
  • They hate him; they really hate him

    May 17, 2012
How ugly will the presidential campaign get? You can't imagine. /more/

Bring on the Huckster - he's tan, trim, rested and ready.

Well, tan, rested and ready. But he could get another lap band between now and Iowa.

An odd post. A CNN/Opinion Research sampling of more registered voters over roughly the same time period has Romney +4. Consensus of seven polls conducted since Halloween has Obama up +1.4. Slow and steady may yet win the GOP nod for Romney, but considering the state of affairs four years ago is instructive ... http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/…

"Middle name ought to be 'Samsonite.'"

Even if anybody at the D-G HAD a sense of humor, Paul, Walter, Mike, et al., they couldn't top that!

Here's for our former Perry2012, don't know what's the costume de jour but this should liven his bones. I'm very doubtful that Ark-Legies-For-Perry want the same tactic extended to state legislators.

"PERRY WOULD CUT CONGRESSIONAL SALARIES IN HALF"

"Gov. Rick Perry, seeking to regain traction in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, on Tuesday unveiled a sweeping plan to shake up Washington by vowing to slash congressional salaries, end lifetime appointments of federal judges and dismantle "wasteful, redundant federal agencies," including the departments of Commerce, Education and Energy."

Huck with all his ethics problems? He's let it be known that money means a lot to him. But he would fit in well with Congress, where I understand the inside information has made multimillionaires of members. I think George W. put his money in a blind trust, but that was voluntary. Congressional people are under no obligation to do likewise.
Sick!

And let's once and for all put Herman Cain to rest. Or let Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, Columbia University and University of California, Los Angeles, law professor . . . and Catharine A. MacKinnon, professor of law at the University of Michigan and visiting professor of law at Harvard University, do it.

Gee, eLwood, it's been a long time since I sat in a civics class. Can a president do that? Because if they can, I'll send the suggestion to our current president fast, damn fast . . . well, about congressional salaries anyway. And lifetime appointments of federal judges, as long as we include the supremes. (Bye-bye, Clarence. Bye-bye, Samuel. Bye-bye . . . uh, who else? John? Antonin? And careful there, Anthony.)
I gotta see if I still have that old civics book. I musta missed a few pages there.
