The Republican dilemma — only Romney can beat Obama

Posted by Max Brantley on Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 10:25 AM

The conclusion above is based on polling in Pennsylvania — without which President Obama probably can't be re-elected. It shows only Mitt Romney in the hunt against President Obama. The dead heat is really pro-Romney when you look at the lean of undecideds.

Go, Newt, go!

Only Romney can beat Obama?

I guess the Early Romney (liberal) is less offensive to Democrats or Independants so less will be energized to go vote?

The later (rightwackwingo) Romney will turn out Dems and lose Independants.

But it is probably accurate that none of the other wacky Repub hopefuls could get any votes but the Glenn Beck hordes.

And now for a little course in Political Science 101: This poll is not of 'likely' voters. It included a sample of 500 Pensylvanians. It was done by PPP which is a democratic polling group. It is notoriously flawed because in past polls PPP has been poorly predictive when identifying Republicans and Republican leaning Independents for the sample. It is also flawed because of its proximity to the general election in November of 2012. Polls taken long before elections are inherently non-predictive of the actual election results.

Good SH, then Newt is as much ahead as any of the other dwarfs so spare us those professorial talks, Newt. Actually, as I understand it, the leader in the Rethuglican race is "none of the above". Like the "nobody" in Family Circus cartoons. I think they need someone further to the right as Bachmann and Santorium are too liberal.

Oh boo hoo...the Republican Party gets the candidates it deserves; they've fed their rabid nut wing super-food for decades as they used them to gain power. So the current crop of nuts is a direct result of the Party choosing to gain office by elevating their nutty rhetoric above the relatively sane voices in the rest of the Party's. Scream 'abortion' 'god' 'blah blah' and their cult will crawl out of the woodwork to vote for em...REGARDLESS OF JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER CONSIDERATION.

I'd be more excited about the prospect of a Newt candidacy if the stolen election of 2000 and the last 11 years of changing every contrary voting law weren't fresh on my mind. After Dubya, the prospect of a Palin or Newt Presidency scares the hell out of me...and, sadly, makes me realize that Bush was far from the worst this fallen Party's capable of inflicting on us.

"..assuming there are fair elections. that is a tall order when seiu and renamed acorn will be involved."

Yes, if we use paper ballots so we don't have to worry about voting machines with no paper back-up supplied by a known Rethuglican bundler for GWB who refuses to allow the source code to be reviewed for errors or "variations". At 9% union membership in the country, I am sure SEIU is a major threat. I thought your guys (and gal) are so good that they can even walk and chew gum at the same time, Perry excepted, of course.

The Rethuglican mantra-why steal one vote when you can steal an entire precinct by controlling the counting mechanism and, of course, you have the poster boy for that in TimmyBoy who should be in jail for voter fraud.
