Maylon Rice, a former newspaperman who's now director of the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District, has announced he'll run for the legislature as a Democrat for House District 85. That's Uvalde Lindsey's district, but he's running for Senate. The shape of the district was changed by reapportionment to cover eastern Fayetteville, Farmington and rural areas near Prairie Grove. David Whitaker, a lawyer, announced earlier as a Democratic candidate.
I'm keeping up with the 135 legislative races only intermittently. But I've known Maylon a long time. I think first of him as a Northwest Arkansas Times reporter giving the kind of attention to then-UA Chancellor John White that Debra Hale-Shelton famously gives to UCA. White, who was secretive, autocratic and not always a straight shooter, deserved the attention. In the process, Maylon caught hell from the usual UA apologists. It's no knock on Hale-Shelton, but it's a bit easier to pick on UCA than it is to pick on UA-F (football branch).

“I think first of him as a Northwest Arkansas Times reporter …”
Didn’t Maylon once work for a paper down around Dumas or McGehee or DeWitt when he was a pup? But I may be thinking of another Rice boy.
.
Former Fayetteville City Councilwoman Adella Gray has announced candidacy for the Ark House , the seat previously won by Charlie Collins.
Ken Aden has announced for Congress, Third District.
Western side of Springdale, don't recall the Ar House district, even has a Demo candidate, fellow by the name of Sugg.
D, I think Maylon did. I went to school at Southern State College (now SAU) and we worked on the paper and yearbook together. If he hasn't changed, he would make a good representative.
Thanks, wannabee. I agree he'd make a good rep if he's the fella I'm thinking about. Didn't know you and he were SAU Muleriders. Beautiful campus. Was a steak cook-off judge at the Magnolia Blossom Festival several years ago. Nice town; some really great folks down there.
Yea, actually I'm a 1973 graduate of SSC!! Growing up in El Dorado, our family couldn't afford to send all three kids to anywhere but!! My two sisters and myself all graduated from there starting in 1970 and ending in 1978.
No regrets as I thought the quality of education matched most other schools in the state including that big one in NWA at the time. I guess what made mom and dad the most proud was that all three of us ended up in public education.
Maylon is a good man; was a good reporter, and has done a hell of a job with the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District, which has gone through some tough times recently. I suspect he would continue the good representation that Lindsey has given.
Must be the same guy! I had a couple of years right out of college working as a photojounralist (newspaper photographer!!) at the Freeman's PB Commercial and Alex Washburn's Hope Star. Even had a short stint working for short-lived "state" paper in Camden.
Short story is I crossed paths with him for awhile after college because of our line of work.
Proves the adage that nothing is free, nothing is simple.
This whole mess stinks.
I couldn't agree more! But the flavor I love the most is Death by Chocolate!…
