Severance revealed for Hog coach Willy Robinson

THREE MONTHS PAY: Willy Robinson got that and another month for bowl bonus as traveling money from UA.
  • THREE MONTHS PAY: Willy Robinson got that and another month for bowl bonus as traveling money from UA.
The Arkansas Times submitted an FOI request several days ago related to the end of Willy Robinson's job as defensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas football team.

I received two documents today:

* Robinson's two-sentence resignation letter Tuesday, Dec. 5.

* A letter dated the same day from Athletic Director Jeff Long . It accepted the resignation and spelled out details of Robinson's severance. He is to be paid his base salary — about $27,000 a month — through March 5. That pay would be stopped if he's hired somewhere else before then. But Long also said he'd review the situation if Robinson doesn't have employment by then. He said Robinson also would get a bowl game bonus equivalent to one month's base pay. So that's four months of pay altogether, worth more than $108,000 at $325,000, which is his university base pay. He got another $50,000 last season from the Razorback Foundation.

He was directed to turn in his computer and keys, but was allowed to keep a university cell phone to use for University business through March 5. The university agreed to pay Robinson's expenses to attend a coming football coaches' convention (a prime spot for employment contracts, usually).

The letter said the UA was keeping Robinson on the payroll through March 5 to ensure a smooth transition. "I very much appreciate your service to the University of Arkansas and wish you the best in the future," concluded Long.

Not a golden parachute, perhaps, but at least a small safety chute.

PS — Kevin Trainor at the UA tells me Robinson had no "long-form" contract. "We don't currently have formal contracts with our assistant coaches. They are appointed employees." Robinson had a contract originally, but when its term expired about a year ago, he became an "appointed" employee, Trainor said.

PPS — Speaking of assistant coaches, Paul Petrino is going to make $475,000 (including a Razorback Foundation $50K) as offensive coordiantor.

UPDATE: Transition to a new defensive coach shouldn't take long. BMFP announced late last night that he'd hired Paul Haynes from Ohio State and he could start work today.

Not too shabby in a state where the median family income is around $36,ooo.

I suppose there's cold comfort to know that athletic elites also enjoy

The Right To Be Fired At Will.

Any other state or U staffer hire a first degree relative, and then be their direct supervisor, they would be front page Dem Gaz and/or indicted. And rightfully so.

Where is the outrage?

I just don't see how Paul Petrino can live on only $475K a year. Why, that's barely above minimum wage.

Maybe he'll be a WalMart greeter in the off season to earn extra money.

You must come to understand how the state's religion works. There is never to be outrage against the prophets and disciples. Never. They can screw their sisters and there's no outrage, In fact, incest is abundant in our overlay religion, Christianity.

Our god, MoMoney, works in strange and wondrous ways, its many blessings to behold.

If anyone wonders how a pedophile (accused, hahahaha) was allowed to use Penn State as his personal playground, it's because we've allowed our state Universities to put football above all else; we've allowed coaches/players to think they're above the day-to-day restraints/limitations that the rest of us face.

I'm not surprised by this salary, I am outraged. That such a poor state allows this is...one reason it will remain a poor state. Just imagine the enrichment that would trickle down (education is the only real trickle-down) if we used salaries like this to hire the best/brightest professors that the world had to offer...I like to dream.

Zelda, shame on you for thinking that bright professors are more important than coaches. You have the old traditionalist idea about what a university is supposed to be about. That simply is no longer relevant in Razorback Nation.

Good God.....yes, I've had a few cocktails, but I'm sitting here trying to imagine what life would be like if I made 27 thousand dollars a month! I don't even know who Willy Robinson is.....and he makes 27 thousand dollars a month! For what....laying golden eggs? My god...it could be wall to wall hookers! I could give a gift of some big bucks to Crystal Bridges and get on Alice's email list.

I could buy much better looking false teeth! I could buy penis pills! I could get the passengers side window in my truck fixed so it wasn't down all the time! I never thought about people making that kind of money in Arkansas!

Is this way tuition is so high at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville? How many Go Hogs Go Chia Pets do you have to sell to pay some coach I've never heard of such big bucks?

I could get a date with Pia Zadora if I had that kind of money! I'm shocked and awed to the max. 1% coaches....who knew? I have to go take a tablet for this one.....and think of what a loser life I'm living! Go 1% Hogs, Go!

(BORROWED)

Razorbacks screwed - Who's at Fault?

#6-ranked Arkansas lost two games all year - to #1 LSU and #2 Alabama.

But they're getting a tiny $3.5M at the Cotton Bowl while #15 Clemson
gets $17M with #23-ranked West Virginia at the more prestigious Orange Bowl?

Is college sports just as crooked as everything else in this once-great country?

And this isn't about my 'favorite team,' either.
This is about #6 getting one-fifth of the money #23 gets - WTF?

Arkansas took the news like a bent-over senate Democrat:

"The University of Arkansas is thrilled to accept a bid to play in the broke-dick Cotton Bowl. Congratulations to Coach Bobby Petrino and the team on earning the opportunity to participate in one of college football's lamest postseason traditions."
-- Director of Athletics Jeff Long, either lying or stupid, Link

Yeah, we're all f-ing THRILLED to get $3.5M instead of $17M.

Logic says #6 would get in one of the five top-tier bowls, but noooooooooooooo.

Even the gag-me Chick-fil-A Bowl pays $5.8M to #25 Auburn and unranked Virginia.

Who's at fault here?
Who decided #6 should get one-fifth of the money #23 gets?

Right on DBI, right on. When higher education just becomes another sports conglomerate, society is in trouble. Of course, you understand, no one is going to pay any attention to us.

Y’all jes hesh up fer a minute and listen! Football coaches are paid to win.

And if you think the UofA coaches are overpaid, just look at Ole Miss. It paid Houston Dale $1.4 million per win this year. That’s way more than Bobby P and his assistants were paid for THEIR wins, dadgummit.

Penn State? Big cover story in Wednesday’s USA TODAY about how newly-appointed PSU president Rodney Erickson is seeking to transform the university’s public image from a football school to a “world class research institution.”

Good luck, Mr. President. It won’t be easy to put a new face on PSU which has long been known as “Linebacker U” for all the NFL-caliber players it has produced.

That said, the first major initiative will be the school’s establishing a national Center for the Protection of Children to conduct research and provide treatment to sex abuse victims across the country. The center will draw experts from the university’s 24 campuses, and will be housed at Hershey Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital.

How will the new center be funded? Why, it’ll use $2 million in college football bowl proceeds PSU is slated to receive from the Big Ten Conference. Of course.

Which brings us back to the importance of football and the dollars the sport generates. President Erickson ain't no dummy. He said that while Penn State needs to de-emphasize football, the de-emphasis does not equate to “damaging” the [football] program.

He just, y’know, wanted to make that clear. Before the 107,000 Nittany Lions who fill the school’s stadium on Saturdays ate him alive.

Conservative: He was "asked to resign." I don't think anyone thinks he volunteered for the unemployment line.

Cato: I feel your pain, and I hope the rule that limits a conference to only two teams in BCS bowls is changed. If it's any consolation, we'll get 1/12th of the BCS championship game take, which will probably be in excess of $40 mil.

As for the posts of others about the over-blown salaries and importance of football, who can argue? It's a sleazy religion but I sit in the amen pew every saturday. I love big-time college football and I love to watch winning programs.
