The person who bought a $77 million Powerball ticket at a Georgia truck stop June 29 has until Monday night before the 180-day window closes to claim the prize. So far, lottery officials have received no indication a claim is coming. If no one shows up, the jackpot will be distributed in proportion to sales to the 44 states and other entities that participate in the Powerball multi-state lottery game.
That would mean a windfall to the Arkansas Lottery. Under Arkansas rules, the money goes into the unclaimed prize pool and ultimately to the state's lottery scholarship fund. Arkansas accounted for about .8 percent of the sales for that week's Powerball sales, which means more than $600,000 of the jackpot could flow to Arkansas, by my rough calculation.

Point 8 %?
Would Arkansas be the lowest? There would have to be 120 states participating for us to be average.
Since Sept., 2009, the Arkansas Lottery has provided $215,000,000 in scholarships to Arkansas students. All the states bordering Arkansas that have lotteries have noticed a big drop in their lotteries since Arkansas voters approved their lottery. The Oklahoma lottery is down almost $ 6 million from sales along the Arkansas frontier. Similar figures hold true for the other states on Arkansas frontiers. And people still bitch and belly ache the fact that this money now stays in Arkansas to benefit youngsters in our state.
Imagine what would happen to the Okie, La., etc. casinos incomes if............................................
For once at 0.8% we are not the dumbest of the 42 other states that offer a lottery to rob the poor.
“And people still bitch and belly ache the fact that [lottery] money now stays in Arkansas to benefit youngsters in our state.”
Yup, Cato, some of ‘em do. And always will. It’s the human condition, y'know. But you’re right: IMAGINE what would happen to casino income in Oklahoma and Louisiana if we Arkies had our own casinos.
In fact, ya don’t even have to imagine. Just talk with folks at the Mississippi Department of Revenue who say they believe our little Oaklawn casino’s “electronic games of skill” are complicit in a decline of revenue at their Tunica and Greenville casinos.
Yet, in what lately have not been the best of months for Mississippi’s casinos, The Magnolia State still won $165.8 million from gamblers in November. Y’think we could use another $166 mil per month here in The Natural State?
I just returned from investing 10 dollars in the Powerball Lottery. It's a win win for me either way. I won't win, but I will have contributed to the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship what is educating my child for the 2nd year. She just got her grades and I'm happy with a 3.4 grade point average. And I want to thank the Grant T. White foundation for the extra money they gave the girl for making good grades. RIP, Mr. Grant...you're a good guy!
If'n I win the lottery later tonight I have made my plans to become a Job Creator. Casa Del DBI needs a lot of work and many carpenters will be needed when I buy the rest of the block, create a history research center & antique auto restoration & storage unit designed architecturally to blend with the rest of my 19th century neighborhood. The house behind me is on the market for 12 thousand dollars, so I'll hardly make a dent in my winnings when I start my real estate grab. Oh yes......bring it!
electronic games of "skill"
"Skill". That's rich, Durango. I filed that in the 'humor' section of my file cabinet right next to the "Little Rock ocean front lots for $1" brochure. Those Madison Avenue ad guys sure are creative.
With all of that money rolling in and the extravagant salaries, you'd think they'd have somebody keep the lottery website up to date.
dbi--True, but sad. When I paid $190. for a year of the D-G, it hurt…
Proves the adage that nothing is free, nothing is simple.
This whole mess stinks.
