No developments in Discovery shooting

Posted by Max Brantley on Mon, Dec 26, 2011 at 11:21 AM

I checked in with Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings on developments in the fatal shooting of a Dallas man outside the Discovery nightclub in Riverdale in the early morning hours Christmas Eve. No arrests have been made. This is the shooting in which Richard Ratley, 35, was killed during an apparent robbery and his brother, Tyler, was injured as they left the club. Police were looking for a red PT cruiser as a possible getaway car.

Speaking of getaway cars: Hastings also reported no arrests yet in the case of the car that smashed into Pizza D'Action's front window. Security cameras caught part of the license number as the driver backed up from the Stifft Station restaurant and sped off on Markham Street.

I read the article on the Discovery shooting. Makes me wonder if it was just a robbery or a hate crime where they also happened to rob the victim. Patrons of Disco are sitting ducks--the parking areas are typically over crowded with cars, very dimly lit, limited in/out access, and patrons are typically at least buzzed when leaving in the wee hours. It would be easy to pop up from behind a car in the back of the parking area and mug someone--or worse.

In 2001 I was leaving a popular East Saint Louis gay nightclub, just as the sun was coming up, when I was attacked. Three men jumped out of a moving car and chased me two blocks to my car. I managed to get inside my car moments before they reached me. They smashed my car with metal rods and kicked in the back passenger side. I honked the horn as my alarm sounded, screaming to the top of my lungs the entire time. After what seemed like a few minutes of this, though I'm sure it was just a few seconds, I managed to dial 911. The East Saint Louis police didn't come after 10 minutes. Frightened for my life still, I sped away afraid they might be lurking and follow me. Thousands of dollars of damage to my car, but I was alive. The emotional scars remain a decade later. I'll never be convinced it wasn't a hate crime.

My thoughts were with the family all day yesterday.

All crimes are Hate Crimes for goodness sake! Govmt. Cheese needs to get a grip. All types of folks come and go from Discovery, Gay, Straight, black, white, asian. In fact I have heard more straight folks go to Discovery then Gay folks now.

There are so many unsolved crimes. I haven't heard anything about who killed Patricia Guardado or who struck Ms. Jiles in Little Rock early christmas eve morning.

There are a lot of people who cared very much about Keye (Richard) in Dallas and it's not like we can go to city hall down there and stir things up. We would all very much appreciate it if you kept updates since we're out of the loop down here.

This sort of thing is happening all over Little Rock. It just isn't reported unless it is north of Markham. Don't fight back. Give them the money.

Or do what I have chosen to do, don't go out at night in Little Rock.

It couldn't be a hate crime, not at a sraright club like Discovery.

I do not believe this was a "hate" crime. Keye and his brother were leaving the nightclub when they were attacked by two men. One other man was in the getaway car. Keye fought the assailants off his younger brother, and the 2 men managed to get away with a wallet and cell phone. They were RUNNING AWAY when they turned around and shot Keye in the stomach. So he was not fighting to hold on to his money - he was trying to get the assailant off of his brother. The cowards had gotten what they wanted and were fleeing. Why didnt they just continue to drive off? Keye was one of the nicest human beings you would ever meet. His friends here in Texas miss him very very much, and this crime was absolutely senseless. Furthermore, I do not trust that the Little Rock PD will be able to catch the murder suspects.

Thanks to Kay from Piper. Keye is my cousin. After reading all of these comments, I feel grateful that someone else out there who actually knew and loved Keye is defending the circumstances surrounding this terrible tradgedy. Thanks again.
