Hillary for vice president

Posted by Max Brantley on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 6:45 AM

THE TICKET: Obama-Clinton, says Reich.
  • THE TICKET: Obama-Clinton, says Reich.
Robert Reich, a Clinton administration cabinet member, claims no inside information but predicts the 2012 Democratic ticket will be Obama-Hillary Clinton, with Vice President Joe Biden heading to the secretary of state slot. His thinking is sound:

Why do I say this? Because Obama needs to stir the passions and enthusiasms of a Democratic base that’s been disillusioned with his cave-ins to regressive Republicans. Hillary Clinton on the ticket can do that.

Moreover, the economy won’t be in superb shape in the months leading up to Election Day. Indeed, if the European debt crisis grows worse and if China’s economy continues to slow, there’s a better than even chance we’ll be back in a recession. Clinton would help deflect attention from the bad economy and put it on foreign policy, where she and Obama have shined.

Hillary is still at it! That girl just can't accept retirement from public life. Of course, nothing comes out about hillary without active participation of her staff. I'm just wondering how a ticket of two neophytes ignites those Independents to vote for obama?

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of Biden as Secretary of State...

Unless she were able to redefine the role, Hillary Clinton as vice president would be a waste of her considerable intellect, passion, and ability to actually get things done. Biden as a go-between with Congress has failed. Maybe Clinton's service as secretary of state has de-polarized her to the point she could bring Democrats and Republicans together on the big economic and social issues. Still, I'd be surprised to see this, as I would be surprised to see her seek the presidency again.

What has hillary accomplished as Sec. of State? What were her qualifications for that position when she was appointed? Would you say that our approval in the world has increased during her tenure or diminished?

I have no objection to Hillary's being on the ticket, and Obama has shined in foreign affairs, and Hillary has followed his direction. I am tired of the whining by Reich and my other liberal brethren about Obama's "cave-ins." Bill Clinton was faced with the same divided government Obama has had to deal with, although what Obama currently faces is worse because the Republicans are intimidated by the racism and stupidity of the Tea Partiers. And Obama came into office in the middle of a near-Depression, and the first Bush's recession had ended when Clinton's term began.Clinton's legislative accomplishments were nil, and Obama saved the auto industry, saved the banking system (which Bush had done some spade work on), passed as good a stimulus package as he could, and passed health care reform.

If the economy turns out to be as bad as predicted above then the only way the administration can turn attention away from it is to start a new war. With which country is any bodies guess since Obama/Clinton have a habit of bombing any country in the world they pick. Or will Clinton's agenda driven "Arab Spring" fall apart into chaos along the lines of what is happening in Egypt or soon to be Syria? Let's not forget Iraq or if Iran is allowed to get the bomb. There are a number of snakes in this basket which Clinton is trying to keep a lid on and I doubt she will be able to charm all of them.

Hillary has been a disaster as Sec. of State. One need only look at the middle east for confirmation of that fact. She had no foreign policy experience going into this gig and it shows. Her appointment was made to satisfy political considerations not based on her resume. If she hadn't been married to Bill Clinton someone else would have been appointed. Since Biden is considered a political clown in Washington by the insiders, I doubt if he will be elevated to anything important. The VP position is a good place to bury losers.

Among other things, I respect and admire Hillary Clinton for success in Libya, a tough-minded approach to Pakistan/Afghanistan, a disciplined response to the Arab Spring, a championing of women's right worldwide, and a matchless work ethic. I probably would have voted against her had she been the presidential nominee in 2008. I probably would vote for her in 2016, though I don't believe I'll have that opportunity. Ad hominem attacks are for losers. (Oops, I think I just made one.)

Those who vote for candidates whose only platform is keeping Obama from being reelected absolutely HATE this idea.

Hillary would not be as easy a target nor as gentle an opponent as Obama.

Americans have grown weary of a special interest group threatening to bankrupt or otherwise destroy this country solely to bring down the President. Hillary would ruin their day.

Holmes, okay, we will put you down as a "no" voter but frankly, your level of hatred toward her is just a sign of total ignorance.

You did read that Reich had mentioned the VP slot, not Hillary. I fuill expect she would turn it down because why put up with having to listemn to the no-brain Republicans. Tea Party brains like you have no idea of what is involved in the world. And you don't like the way the Middle East is turning out, well thank "Democracy-spreading" George W Bush who started the whole thing while causing hatred toward the US by every faction. Under GWB, everyone country hated us-the Midle East, the "Old Europe" which just happens to be most of NATO, as well as the Russians. Funny what lying to the UN can do for you.

And starting a war. There are a bunch of ReTHUGlican leaders calling for the bombing of Iran because they shot down one of our drones OVER Iran. I doubt we would be happy if the Russians were flying one from Cuba over southern Florida? It will take centuries to repair the damage done by GWB and his actions in the Middle East and that will only occur when the oil finally runs out (which will be sooner than anythuing thinks since teh Saudi fields are way past theri prime).

Both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden have said, in effect, that they can't even imagine such a swap of their roles. Several political pundits seem to agree that Obama wants and needs to have Biden's office just down the hall from his own.

As for choosing Hillary as his running-mate for 2012, I submit that it would solidify, not soften, the dissatisfaction of the liberal Democratic base with Obama's continuation of Clintonian "triangulation." Obama, even more than Bill Clinton, repeatedly allows the Republican right to set a policy thesis, but never holds fast even to a critically important policy antithetical to the Republican intention, but, instead, compromises on a fake "synthesis" masquerading as an appeal to middle-of-the-roaders. The result is perpetual movement of political "center" to the right.

Obama ran on a promise of "change you can believe in." His poll numbers are low -- and, in my opinion, would be much lower if it were not for incredibly lousy Republican alternatives -- because his administration is peopled with and dependent upon the same-old, same-old financial sector advisers and political triangulaters and high-dollar lobbyists that Clinton catered to. Hillary as a running-mate would not help.

Bill Clinton's ties to Teneo, MF Global, his Clinton Foundation fundraising obligations, etc. won't be helpful to Hillary's political career.

He seems restless, like he wants to amass some serious wealth and get back to being Saturday Night Bill again. If he had all his staff laid end-to-end, I wouldn't be surprised.

When did 'disagreement' become the same as 'hatred'. I wasn't aware that the general public or even your neighbor next door had bought into that transferrence. I disagree with many people but I would hardly characterize that as 'hatred'. Me thinks that you protest too much and have become a slave to your ideology. Hillary is prominent in some circles simply because of who she is married to and not for any demostrated ability. I was simply pointing that fact out.

Hillary needs to tell Obama to Kiss her Ass. Obama knifed Bill and Hill in the back during the last campaign. Even used the old race card against Bill. Biden as Secretary of State is a JOKE. He is a JOKE.

Robert Reich just had a column contract to fulfill and decided to toss off this pile of shit. This has as much chance of happening as me voting for TehLightbringer.

"Clinton would help deflect attention from the bad economy and put it on foreign policy, where she and Obama have shined."

Are you effing kidding! They have been insane... mad men and women, war criminals. First of all, they insisted our past war criminals face no investigation whatsoever for lying us into wars.

Their foreign policy has managed to make me not miss Cheney and Bush. They have indeed made things worse in most cases. The begged to keep our troops in Iraq. They promoted Betrayus, twice. A failed General from at least two losing wars. Promote him, twice!

They led the way to extending the patriot act for four years! Even Bushco and the GOP didn't do that. They led the way to decriminalizing mass surveillance of US citizens without warrant or cause... with their FISA retroactive immunity... A direct broken promise taken even further by immunizing it all.

They cheered for Sulieman the torturer of Egypt (known as the man and place where you don't just send people to be tortured, but tortured and murdered/disappeared). Because they fund him... to replace Mubarak. Then Hillary takes a big fat check by the Heritage Foundation in route to the Egyptian Army and other nefarious ploys which have surely been used to abuse the hell out of democratic efforts in that country.

They attacked Libya without provocation.. bombed the hell out of that country to get just one man, again... and the day they claimed Daffi was dead Al Q Flags rose over Libyan courthouses. Yeah boy... We really showed them liberation. For the first time in decades Libyan women must wear burkas, Libyans lost their family members, water, homes, health care, college... a million people fled the country in all directions... because of us.

And everywhere we do this, including Iraq.. we always leave another tyrant in charge in our wake. This has long been a bipartisan feature of neoliberals and neoconservatives who rotate through our foreign policy.

They are up to no good in Syria, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan.

Has everyone here forgotten about Honduras in the first few months of their administration?

They were at best dead silent while their best buddies the Saudis smashed peaceful uprisings for democracy in Bahrain. All around the middle east.. wherever democratic uprisings occur among people... the one thing all these fine people see is tear gas cans manufactured in the USA.

They now drone bomb innocents on a massive scale, including American Citizens and their children, with no charges whatsoever, in at least five more muslim countries than Bush Cheney did.

They threaten Iran with the same manufactured lunacy and fervor Bush Cheney and the rest of the PNAC AIPAC crowd.

They have mercilessly continued to wage war upon innocent Afghanistan's while maintaining torture gulags prisons in Baghram, even though the military has suggested there are no no more than 2 Al Q in the entire country.

You O and C supporters have no human decency whatsoever.

They both ought to be in the Hague. We the USA are at least as egregious if not more so... the terrorists of the world under O and C.

Thank GOD I am no longer a Democrat.
