Fire probe: Conway woman killed granddaughter, self

Posted by Max Brantley on Mon, Jan 9, 2012 at 3:29 PM

JANICE ROBBINS
Faulkner County authorities tell the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway that Janice Robbins, 63, stabbed her 7-year-old granddaughter Abby and they both died in the fire she shet.

Their bodies were found after a fire was reported Saturday morning in Robbins' home. Investigators found a suicide note in Robbins' car.

Janice Robbins adopted her granddaughter after her father died while serving in Iraq in 2005. The sheriff's office quoted Robbins' note as saying she couldn't stand to leave her granddaughter behind.

She looks like someone I would have liked to have known. I can't imagine her despair.

"she couldn't stand to leave her granddaughter behind"

Elaborate. I wondering why the 8 year old was leaving the care of her grandmother. A number of reasons come to mind, but I'll wait for more details.

Nonetheless, that home could not have been all that healthy for the girl if she was under the care of an adult that took to stabbing before killing herself.

Paper said the girl's father was killed in Iraq in 2005. The grandmother (father of soldier) took in the 8 year old.

Paper said the grandmother had recently finished legal adoption.

Perhaps the loss of the soldier son was the unbearable burden and the grandmother could not go on and could not bear to leave the 8 year old. Could not bear to cause the 8 yearold the extra pain of GM loss on top of father loss.

Sometimes suicidal parents kill their children to "save" them from the pain their own suicide would ad to the child.

Sad all the way around.

>>she couldn't stand to leave her granddaughter behind.<<

Vulture love. She was so special that she was the only one entitled to the grandaughter's attention and affection.

Where was (is) the mother of the child? An earlier article said she had consented to the adoption of this child, while retaining custody of another daughter. An earlier article said that the father was killed in Iraq in a drunken brawl with another U.S. soldier. There is more to be known about this sad case, and since it is Deborah Hale-Shelton's beat, I'm sure we will learn.
