Today, Dr. Diana Gonzales Worthen of Springdale will announce for an open Senate seat. She brings a Latino background into a district with one of the state's largest Latino populations, though by no means a majority of voters.
Sen. Bill Pritchard and Rep. Jon Woods are contending for the seat on the Republican side. It has been redrawn from its current configuration.
Dr. Diana Gonzales Worthen, an educator and small business owner from Springdale, will declare for State Senate on Saturday, January 14 in the atrium of the Center for Nonprofits at the JTL Shops in Springdale at 4:30pm. She will run as a Democrat in the new Senate District 7, which consists of Springdale, Elkins, Johnson, and Goshen, and some parts of Fayetteville, along with smaller communities in rural Washington County.
Diana is the project director at the University of Arkansas for “Project Teach Them All,” a grant-funded initiative that works to improve academic achievement and English language development in English as a Second Language (ESL) students in the Springdale School District. She previously worked in the Springdale and Rogers public school systems.
Diana also serves on the Board of Directors for the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, the Northwest Arkansas Council Educational Excellence Workgroup, and the Washington County Historical Society, among other national organizations. Diana is the co-founder and Vice-Chair of OneCommunity, a group that promotes communities working together to enhance the quality of life of all people through the use of best practices and outreach services that improve health, education and leadership skills.

Driftglass has a couple of excerpts from "A Face in the Crowd". Lonesome Rhodes, played by Andy Griffith is the Republican base personified. In the second clip, we see what happens when the pandered to base gets the idea that they are actually running things.

Is life imitating art or is it "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose"?

I always find it interesting when someone says a person has a "Latino" background being a qualification to run for office. So....if a white person runs, can we say, as a special qualification, that the person has a "caucasion" background. How bout all the white folks vote for white folks and all black folks vote for black folks and all "Latino" folks vote for only Latino folks.Lets just do that. Obama has all the blacks anyway. The problem is that we are too fractured in racial issues. To initially label somoene as "Latino" without even talking about her career and how she will represent ALL Arkansans is indicative of Brantley-speak. Lets us white folks vote for all people who DONT WANT ILLEGAL immigration, are tired for "press 2 for Spanish," are tired of illegals taking jobs from the over 9% (real) unemployment, tired of the gangs in NW Arkansas (ask Rogers, AR!!)and want to have English as the official government language. If someone runs as a representative of a race...and says so...why do the other races who are voters vote for that person??????
November, I am curious. Since you are obviously a member of the modern equivalent of Lonesome Rhode's flock of sheep, which of the categories listed by him are you a member of: redneck, cracker, pea picker, hillbilly, house frau, shut-in.
Just wondering'.
Well, November, that might be right since the ReTHUGliocan Party has become the party of old, white, hateful people who are scared of anyone who doesn't look like then, talk like them, are smarter than them (and at least 1/2 of them are below average), don't go to the same church they go to, or otherwise are "different". If you think that the current group of yahoos in Washington represent anyone rather than the rich, you are too dumb to be allowed to vote or spend your own money.
It would be nice if any of them had any realization of how their attuitudes and actions are hurting the majority of the American people but, of course, party before country.
This comment on another blog regarding the noot/mittens dust up made me laugh and I have nowhere else to put it.
"Wingnuts have Howitzer grade circular firing squads. Dems use spitballs, paper airplanes, and sternly worded blog posts."
Still no respect, huh November? I don't even feel like pickling your post apart for grammatical errors, mis-punctuations and ad hominem bullshit today 'cause I have friends coming over and don't want to waste the time. You've posted 293 times on this blog, have you noticed ANY change for all your hyperbole and effort? Or do you go over to some other blog and post "Hey I showed them libruls today!". Only a fool does something 293 times and expects a different result.
To quote you Marc...shut up! I have as much respect for you as you have for me. Show me how much you love the 99%. Make yourself feel good. Find another person's money you can give away, then call your self "good" for doing it. "Caring " for doing it. You bullshit (your word) liberal. Just think, you silly idiot, Arkansas voted against NO-bama in the 08 election in a higher percentage than any other state except for Nebraska and Oklahoma. I LOVE ARKANSANS........ Go HOGS !!!!!
>>Go HOGS !!!!!
Great. November and Diana Gonzales Worthen has something in common. She too loves the Hogs and rarely misses a home game.
As a member of the Northwest Arkansas Council Diana is a member of the ruling body in NWA. Top that Jon Woods who plays in a acid-rock band and is an insurance salesman.
There's big change coming in Springdale. The gud ol boys club who get whatever it is they want may not be getting so much extry butter on their bread in coming years.
.
Oh give November a break! He's suffering because he turned on his computer this morning and saw his worst nightmare...an educated, accomplished, Latino WOMAN daring to run for public office in Arkansas....oh the horrors!
America is changing..even in the deep South. The 400 plus year rule of the American white male is coming to an end and reviewing our long history...it can't happen too soon. American minorities have battled and birthed their way to the top and they will not put up with not having a seat at the table.
There's no way Dr. Diana Gonzales Worthen won't be an improvement over the Huckabees, Hutchinsons, Boozmans we've suffered under. She's picked a great year to run for office because by the time November comes around (not talkin bout the blogger) American voters will be sick of Republicans who think we're angered by envy of their wealth.
We're angered by the rich who think their money puts them above the law and out of the reach of the tax man. We're angered they use their money to buy our government. We're angered because the rich do to all of us what they first did to Native Americans, the real owners of this country.
Rich white men want women between the sheets in bed, not in the halls of Congress. Rich white men want people of color in their yards roofing and pruning trees & shrubs, or in the kitchen churning out delicious food, not on school boards or in our legislature. They ship off our good jobs and say we're lazy because we don't want to stand in blood and cut up chickens for 12 hours per day at minimum wage. They need us to be Duggars so a cheap and desperate workforce is always available. When we won't step up, they encourage illegal immigration while pretending to be against it.
If we dare to question...they scream at us like Boss Womack. Well, it's high time we scream back! The spring & summer of our discontent is right around the next corner. The lost Middle Class will join with the Occupy movement and the rich will all seem to have a dog carrier strapped to the roofs of their luxury cars by next election time.
I've recently compiled a list of everyone who ever did me wrong over the last 56 years and surprisingly 99.5% of my personal villains were well off white men. In light of all that, never again will I expect my next bad blow to come from someone with darker skin. Latinos haven't hurt me, black men haven't hurt me, Vietnamese haven't hurt me, gay people haven't hurt me, atheists haven't hurt me. Mull this over and then take a good look at the smiling faces of Mitt or Newt or Mike Huckabee and compile your own list of personal villains.
PS, for Max:
"Ars Technica reports that three of copyright troll Righthaven's company lawyers, including CEO Steve Gibson, are the subject of a Nevada State Bar investigation. Details of the inquiry aren't public, but judges have been blasting Righthaven's legal team so strongly in court that the move is hardly a surprise."
Kudos, DBI. Another tour de force from you.
I'm out of here for the rest of the day, but just need to report that the xtian confab deep in the heart of Texas have arrived at a decision. No puffs of smoke from a chimney to signal a pope has been elected, but there may as well have been. It's Santorum, for the win. Are they serious? Yes, they are. They are done ready to start coalescin' and politickin' and instructin' their flocks how God wants them to vote. It ain't gonna happen for Santorum in the primaries or next November (on the chance that Santorum's chances return from Uranus where they recently moved).

DBI, that taste of bile must be champagne ot your insulated, hateful heart. Believe me, I am glad you have been so sheltered that you can say you have only been wrong by angry white folks. I gave up bile for Lent long ago.
Never mind that fact that there are plenty of black folks, women even, that have been in high positions within GOP circles. I have no doubt that if induced, Condi could be the salvation of the GOP and this country, if run against barry O. While we are all talking about racism, we have folks from the party that claims to defend the right of all, make delineations and notes of various races.
Mom always said that race will stop being an issue when people cannot remember race, when we can look at the different color of our skins, our different religions and those difference will not be the vaguest thought in our heads.
Fact of the matter is, it matters. It matters to Dems, it matters to the GOP and it matters to all who hate or play agents to folks of color. Yes, the Dems want to play up the latina angle, though I don't see where it really matters. But, it will be touted by the Dems, lookey, we got us a 'Latina' and she a doctor and all. Same old racism that is used so harshly, and falsely against the GOP.
People are in the nature of hurting and hating each other. Hate to tell some of you, it isn't about race, or religion, it is about being human.
I don't care what she is, I care about what she wants to do as a rep. THAT is the one and only important thing.
Steven E, I harbor the notion that Condi Rice is not really a black woman. There is a zipper down her spine, and when you unzip it you find an old white guy inside. All of my black friends in L.A. share this view, even as they are proud of her accomplishments.
Condi has a second cousin in L. A. named Constance Rice. Connie Rice is a civil rights attorney and has served on some citizens review board for the LAPD. She got a lot of respect from the LAPD for her fair mindedness, hard work, and intelligence. And she did it without being mentored and pushed along in her career by a bunch of old white men (George Schulz, her fellow board members at Standard Oil---or is it Chevron---are just two examples).
I am not taking anything away from Condi. She's smart and hardworking, but the old white guy R's groomed her for years for bigger things.
If Ms. Worthen and her campaign workers can get the Hispanic voters registered, and out to the polls, she will stand a good chance in this new district. The redistricting, I believe, and eLwood will correct me if I am wrong, took away areas that contained much base support for Pritchard in the East and South, and Wood in the west Springdale area. This would be good news to Northwest Arkansas, because outside of Fayetteville, it has been a long time since we have seen a Democrat in the legislature. (Of course, turncoat Tim Summers called himself a Democrat until he decided he wanted to go to the General Assembly.)
About 60 people turned out for Diana'a announcement. Not bad for a 3 day notice. Crowd was mixed but a preponderance of young people were on hand.
Outlier, that whole thing about Condi is pretty disgusting, and goes to show how folks can look on someone based on race and engage in racism and ignorance.
I have heard that term used in a derogatory fashion, black on the outside, white on the inside among the folks in Long Beach, Compton and Inglewood. Long Beach folks used that term to 'justify' why they killed a 14 year old honor student who only wanted to educate her way out of a bad life in a bad neighborhood.
Condi has always appeared to be her own woman. That is why she avoided the snakepit of DC, and has returned to teaching. White or black, male or female, Condi Rice would be a refreshing choice for president, someone competent.
Do folks have to fit so conveniently into your perceptions pegs to avoid racist comments?
Steven E, you are missing the whole point of what I wrote. You accuse the Dems of cynically promoting a Latino (with a half-hearted "both sides do it") for political gain within the Latina community. I merely pointed out the biggest example of that kind of cynicism in recent history. There are other examples of such cynicism in recent times---Michael Steele as the head of the RNC, Herman Cain's short-lived candidacy are just two. In Steele's case it was the power brokers reacting to a black man in the White House. In Cain's case, it was the low information voters who supported him as proof they weren't bigoted.
Face it Steven E, it is the current Republican party that is pandering to the lowest of human motives in their quest for power, not the Dems. On GLBT issues and race issues, the Dems are, for the most part, on the side of the angels. Republicans, not so much.
I stand by what I said. Condi Rice is brilliant and worked hard to achieve. She was also groomed and moved along in her career by a group of cynical old white guys who recognized her brilliance and were willing to use it for their own ends.
Your Mom was right, "Mom always said that race will stop being an issue when people cannot remember race...."
I wish it would stop being an issue. If we can't talk about it, it will never go away. It is dangerous to talk about it on a blog where we are anonymous, more or less. I am most comfortable talking about it with my black friends in southern California and the one black friend I have here in Arkansas.
Never the less, the nettle must be grasped. Misunderstandings will happen. I will not accuse you of racist comments, Steven. I wish you felt the same toward me.
I mixed up LatinA and LatinO in that post. I remember enough of my Spanish to know the difference. Apologies to Diana Gonzales Worthen.
When I hear the name "Worthen" in Arkansas, I hear banking money and the influence of the rich. Same family or different?
Revenues and expenses aside, readers of the NWA Times, The Morning News, & The Daily…
I hope it's not lost on anyone how close this incident was to the robbery/murder…
Hahaha. Partisanship invalidates opinions? This, coming from folks that are actually talking about supporting Q…
