Buyer ready to resume Yarnell's ice cream production

Posted by Max Brantley on Mon, Jan 16, 2012 at 3:29 PM

Schulze and Burch Biscuit Co. has announced completion of the purchase of assets of the bankrupt Yarnell's ice cream business in Searcy and plans to reintroduce Yarnell's ice cream in Arkansas stores, using the same recipes, by spring. Reopening of the Searcy plant is to begin very soon.

News release follows:

NEWS RELEASE

Schulze & Burch Biscuit Co., a Chicago-based wholesome snack manufacturer with a plant in Searcy, has completed the acquisition of Yarnell’s Ice Cream Co., an 80-year-old manufacturer of premium ice creams, frozen yogurt and the nation’s first fat-free, no sugar-added line of “Guilt Free” frozen desserts.

With the transaction finalized, Schulze & Burch Biscuit management will begin meeting with retailers to present the Yarnell’s product line with original formulas. The process of re-opening the plant will begin immediately using some of Yarnell’s former employees.

“The outpouring of excitement and support for the Yarnell’s re-launch has exceeded all of our expectations,” said Kevin M. Boyle, president and chief executive officer of Schulze & Burch Biscuit Co. “We have heard loud and clear that Arkansans want their beloved ice cream back — as it was. We’re looking forward to making that happen!”

Schulze & Burch is planning to make Yarnell’s products available at favorite retailers across the state by this spring.

In early December 2011, the company purchased Yarnell’s assets in an auction held by the company’s bankruptcy trustee for approximately $1.3 million. Schulze & Burch has more than 85 years’ experience in manufacturing quality, wholesome snacks.

I'm breaking into this last tub of Ozark Black Walnut I found back in October in Mountain View. YAY!

This is great. I had feared someone would buy the name like what happened with Jackson Cookie Vanilla Wafers, such a disappointment.

But using the same plant and many of the original workers sounds like the quality will be back also.

Remember all, if you want Yarnells available, you will have to buy it. Don't just save it for special occasions or it will go away again.

If it is as good as the original, I will be a steady customer.

Now they just need to make it a full half gallon again.

If it IS a half gallon, I hope they change the dimensions. The only reason I stopped buying Yarnell's ice cream was because other brands started selling their product in a narrower, oblong tub that easily fits in my freezer door.

Hope the new guys have plenty of cash to cough up for slotting fees to the store managers to buy that freezer space.

We live in Indiana and anytime we go South we start checking out the stores for Yarnell's ice cream. We have relatives that for years lived in Arkansas and that's how we learned how good Yarnell's tasted. So glad they are back, hopefully we can find it in the Kroger's stores in Tennessee. Good luck to y'all in Searcy, keep Yarnell's going! And thanks to the company who brought the company back to life! Hey there Michigan company, how about bringing Yarnells' to Indiana?
