Who killed the cat? 3rd District controversy continues

Posted by Max Brantley on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Absent a solid development in finding the killer, I'm inclined to move on past the slaying of a cat belonging to a campaign worker for Ken Aden, the Democratic candidate for 3rd District Congress. It was mutilated and the killer scrawled the word "liberal" on the cat's body.

But Republican Rep. Steve Womack's father Kermit DID have to go on his right-wing talk show in Russellville last week and insinuate the killing was a publicity gimmick by the underfunded Aden campaign. A snippet here:

Under the circumstances, you can forgive Aden for issuing a news release terming Womack's remarks "offensive" and "disgusting" and asking for an apology.

UPDATE: Kermit Womack told NWAOnline that he had nothing to apologize for because he made no direct accusation. No, he only said a desperate campaign would come up with tricks to get attention. The insinuation is clear. And, today, he described the event as "non-news." Tell that to a cat lover. Time for Kermit to STFU, as reader Quapaw suggested, but history indicates that isn't going to happen.

ADEN NEWS RELEASE

Russellville- In a broadcast on Friday, Kermit Womack, father of Rep. Steve Womack, insinuated that the killing of the cat owned by Aden Campaign Director Jacob Burris was a stunt to earn publicity for the Aden Campaign. Ken Aden, Democratic Candidate for Congress, responded that the thinly veiled accusation was one of the most offensive things to be said about the death of the Burris Family's pet, which was brutally bludgeoned to death in what appears to have been a politically motivated attack on the Burris family.

"To accuse Jake of using the murder of his family pet for publicity, even in a speculative way, is absolutely disgusting. It's akin to blaming the victim of a rape for the crime. Mr. Womack owes an apology to Jake and his family who have been terrorized by this incident," Aden said.

"The authorities are at work and an investigation is still ongoing into the crime and catching the assailant," Aden added. "The outpouring of support from people across this state and the nation has been amazing. I'm thankful that there are so many people out there thinking about Jake and his family and refuse to let Mr. Womack's unkind accusations overshadow the thoughts and prayers of so many."

Is there any way of proving that Burris' address was given out on the air? Rethuglicans always scream false flag to cover up the ugly behavior of their base, which they no longer control and without whom they can't win elections.

Outlier, not really, unless someone has a tape of the broadcats, and that would also mean they may use off air calls to give an address out.

Simple truth is, though, a lot of that stuff is public record, which anyone can access with a little diligence. You can find it about Womack, Aden or the Tooth Fairy if she were running. Kermit is being facetious when he tries to claim some crazy idea that deflects from some of the crap they spew. I did not support Womack for the 3rd. I was pushing a better guy who was not part of the establishment, who did not have the blessing of the GOP county bosses, and who would not have come out and stated anything like the crazy conspiracy theories of Kermit. Kermit also forgets that things ike Facebook are not as anonymous as he would have us believe. Many of us, like me, post with our name, and with a little digging, you can find me, too.

I know there are dangers from all sorts. Being me, I piss off liberals and conservatives. I have run into my share of violently deranged liberals.

Fact of the matter is, while Steve wasn't obligated to apologize for the exploits of some nebulous entity, his dad is now on the hook for a very real and contrite apology. Not only should Kermit apologize to Agen and his people, Kermit needs to apologize to the people of Arkansas.

We sure don't want to return to pre-Reagan time of the "Fairness Doctrine" for public airwaves since we grant a license to private broadcasters.

There was a time when fair meant something in America. I think ham radio operators are held to higher standards.

The Aden campaign has a credibility problem due to its own history of violent rhetoric and baseless accusations, to wit:

"In a stunning statement today, Pope county Republican chairman stated “Unions should be eradicated.” If you own a corporation, I’m sure you believe that is true and would kill to eradicate people standing up for themselves." - Aden campaign statement, Oct 1, 2011.

So in response to the stupid GOP statement about unions, Aden issued an equally stupid statement that all corporation owners are tantamount to being killers. And according to Jake Burris, anyone who disagrees with that viewpoint is automatically a member of the Republican Party.

RC, hardly the same as committing a violent act. Words fly, not all of them measured.

But when someone is suddenly confronted by a violent act, it has gone beyond words said in the heat of debate and into criminal action.

It isn't the loud ones you have to worry about, it is the quiet ones, hanging back, not part of the crowd, that have already made up their mind, that you have to worry about.

Kermit's an idiot. You had criminal situation where everyone is pointing fingers at everyone, and he jumps in with both feet planted firmly in jowl. He could have remained, like Aden, a gentleman. Better yet, just keepiong his idiotic conspiracy theories to his own small, boiling mind. But nope, he chimed in with a basless statement.

One of my favorite books, for so many reasons, originally recommended by a psychiatrist friend, is Gavin De Becker's "The Gift of Fear."

The jacket blurb says, "True fear is a gift. Unwarranted fear is a curse. Learn how to tell the difference. This book can save your life."

Among so many salient points for those working with victims of seemingly anonymous threats and violence is the simple question: "Don't think about who could or could not have done this. Don't think about ANYTHING, if you can help it. When I ask you who did it just say the first name that pops into your head. No matter how irrational it seems."

Overwhelmingly, it turns out upon subsequent police investigation, that's EXACTLY who did it.

Good book, Razorbabies.

Steven E - Candidates should be held accountable for their own words. Gentlemen don't insinuate that all corporation owners "would kill to eradicate people standing up for themselves", nor would they make false accusations against those who disagree with that statement. There is still time for the Democrats to find a better candidate.

You know back in the 90s Kermit was a pretty good ol boy. He didn't raise too much hell about the Clinton days mainly cause he was getting laid fairly often. Had him a honey or two on the staff. His cows were doing OK too. He had the Hitchin Post on-air flea markets, farm reports and during the season there was always a baseball game playing every day. It was Americana of old, alive on airwaves in Bentonville/Russellville. Life was easier then, save for the Blue Dress crowd.

Then came Rove/Bush/Cheney and 9/11. Perfect storm and it hit Kermit right between the eyes.

Tyson, Georges, Campbell Soup, and the former Hudson Foods in Rogers needed cheap labor back then (to meet Wall St demands) so they brought the 3RD World to NWA. Kermit's boy, Steve, became the Great White Hope for Rogers as the looming sea of brown surrounded it. He was gonna save them from the Hispanic hordes which were no more than labor demands of local big bidness. Like all hourly workers, some of them got out of hand from time to time but they sure could clean chickens, build houses and landscape. No denying it. And on the cheap too. There's nothing a bidnessman from NWA appreciates more than cheap labor.

Sort of a circus if you think about it.

If none of y'all have been to NWA Wal-Marts by all means do. They're all bi-lingual, big signs in Spanish, welcoming our brown skinned population with their own language, product descriptions, and lovely Hispanic check-out clerks and door greeters.

Has venido a ver a los amigos.

Dunno about this one, RC. Sure, we can all stick our foot in our mouth. Done it myself a time or two -- a day, if I'm lucky. But I believe I'd like to read, or better yet, hear/see the whole speech. Context and tone count for a lot.

I will not vote A, but I do find him a capable candidate, certainly less obnoxious and noxious than Womack, but then, I didn't want Womack, either. The tone, though, also harkens back t the days when there were bloody fights on the streets. Union thugs against corporate thugs. I am no fan of the unions, and if not protected by govt, would flake away on their own. But the campaign statement isn't too far off the mark, and there was a heck of a lot more in that statement than the lines you cherry picked, RC.

Hardly a statement meant to incite revolt, but defend, vigorously, a position, and none of it meant to absolve anyone of the crime of terrorism that was perpetuated upon Burris and his family.

Knock, that just goes to prove how crazy the Rethuglican contingent is. I can't picture an Obama supporter carving a big "R" or "G" on their face. You gotta admit that the conservatives have far more than the mandated quota of insanity in their midst.

Ken, I wish I lived in your district so I could vote on your behalf. If only the republican fantasies of voter fraud were true.

That story made me say "I'm sorry some humans suck." to my cat and hug it tighter than normal. I'm sure he wondered what was going on.

Kermit and his supporters exist in a different time and place than America today (or for that matter, even Arkansas today). A few years ago I would listen to Kermit's rants in the morning (most of the station's other programming was filled with commercials for vitamins and chiropractors). Anyway, Kermit was telling a story of a military exercise at Fort Chaffee where there happened to be a black officer also participating. Kermit talked to the man then told his fellow officers "Gentlemen, that is 1 of the finest COLORED officers I have ever met." I'm paraphrasing of course. The COLORED officer turned out to be Colin Powell.

KURM used to employ (they may still, I haven't listened in a while) the former mayor of Centerton. He became the former mayor when he created a website detailing how he had left his family, assumed the identity of a dead man, and started a new life so he could avoid the devil worshippers that were trying to abduct and sacrifice him. His previous family had no idea he was still alive and he was declared legally dead years before. If you weren't around here in the late '80s - early '90s it was a crazy time when these things were believable though of course utterly ridiculous (see also: WM3). To hold on to this story for 25 years is absolute madness.

In some ways I feel sorry for Kermit. In the last 20 years Rogers has more than doubled in size. The internet and radio networks have isolated him and his rapidly aging audience turning them even more radical.

ironfortified knows of which he speaks. KURM radio, which is an AM station, draws less than one per cent, yes, less than 1%, of the Northwest Arkansas listening audience now. It is totally insignificant. So Kermit is only preaching to the choir, people who are just as deluded as he is. I think Steve Womack saw the hand-writing on the wall, back in the late 1990s, and realized that AM radio was dead, and that is why he got into local politics and ran for Mayor of Rogers. KURM has an FM outlet also, but it is so low-powered it doesn't get out of Rogers.
