National unemployment rate drops to 8.3 percent

Posted by Max Brantley on Fri, Feb 3, 2012 at 7:48 AM

I think one of my morning readers has it right:

News that a jump in jobs sent the unemployment rate from 8.5 to 8.3 percent in January will be credited by Republican candidates to the national expectation that Mitt Romney will win the November election. It's the hope, see, that something will at last be done about the economy President Obama destroyed.

CNN says:

U.S. employers stepped up their hiring in January, bringing the unemployment rate down for the fifth month in a row.

Employers added 243,000 jobs in January, the Labor Department reported Friday, marking a pick-up in hiring from December, when the economy added 203,000 jobs. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 8.3% from 8.5%.

The report was stronger than most economists had expected. But the job market still has a long way to go to fully recover from the financial crisis. The economy still needs to add about 6 million jobs to get back to 2008 employment levels.

Geez, the country might actually be doing better in spite of the Rethugicans obstructionism. Imagine how far along we'd be if they had helped.

US labor force declined by 1.2million and temporary workers increase by record.

The unemployment rate can be 2% but it doesn't matter if the participation rate sux.

All time low at 63% participation rate. Awesome.

AND the November and December job reports were revised up by an additional 60,000 jobs. Suck on that, HoodLifter. Good news for HoodLifter is more Americans out of work.

I turned on CNN this morning to see a talking heads discussion of the unemployment figures. One young white boy in the middle looked really, really glum. It was easy to figure out he was the Rethuglicon Tea Pot Talking Head and had to make more Americans working seem like a communist plot. Tough job! A fellow on the other side of the issue said that since Rethuglicons are saying having a Democrat in the White House is socialism, socialism looks pretty good. Poor HoodLifter and Rethuglicons in general.

We sure can't have Rethuglicon W leaving the White House with 700,000 jobs lost in January 2009 replaced by 250,000 private sector jobs created by Obama three years later, now can we.

as a reminder, the US will mathematically have NO umemployment left when the labor participation rate drops just 5% more to 58.5%.

HL. they do have drugs for your mental condition that you can get with Medicaid funds since you obviously are not working (or cheating on your employer if you should be working).

Lots of shenanigans going on... I mean BLS "adjustments" and wiping people off the seeking employment map... not because they suddenly have a job.
