The line is open. Final words:

* SUGGESTED AGENDA ITEM FOR THE CONSERVATIVE CAUCUS — SEX EDUCATION : If this is such a conservative state, as people like Sen. Jason Rapert bray all the time, how do you explain the runaway extramarital screwing. Study says Arkansas leads the U.S. in teen pregnancies. Maybe birth control pill and condom availability aren't such bad ideas. The abstinence education model preferred here seems mostly to be delivering not abstinence, but babies.
* REALITY GATORS: Too bad a reality TV camera wasn't standing by. A traffic stop in Delight last week led to arrests of Arkies in possession of illegal alligators, the Game and Fish Commission said. Details here. Among the allegations, a Hope man sold two young alligators to another man for $40 and some methamphetamine.
* FOR NLR SCHOOLS: Bubba Lloyd, a North Little Rock politico who may yet make another run for mayor, says he supports the proposed North Little Rock school tax increase because school officials have done a good job of saying how the money would be spent and because it is badly needed. Hmmm.
* PISS ON THE FOI LAW: The spanking new Central Arkansas Technology Park Authority is going to meet tomorrow and one agenda item is to hire a civil engineer to plan for the first building — and presumably plan which neighborhood will be condemned for land. Members are reviewing expressions of interest from engineeers singly, so as to not meet together on the subject. We have made requests for copies of the documents that have been submitted and have, as yet, received not a peep in response. This is typical of Mark Stodola-style city government accountability. When it comes to an organization whose administration is STILL being handled by the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce and subsidized, as the Chamber is, by tax dollars, it's about what you'd expect.

Republicans, in general and especially those who constantly use god to further their careers, HATE real Democracy for the 'little' people...as demonstrated by their consistent pissing on FOIA and Sunshine laws. As governor and President, Clinton was a vocal friend of FOIA. On the flip side, his Royal Highness Huck thought being accountable, as FOIA dictates, to the peasants was beneath him. I wish folks fought for FOIA like they do their guns.
Of course Republicans are gonna beat the hell out of issues like sex education, gay marriage, evolution, blah blah...it's an election year, after all; and it's not like they can run on the things they actually believe in or do.
Right-wingers have to oppose sex education and contraception in order to increase abortion rates so that they can keep the religious right engaged. Also, conservatives welcome high teenage pregnancy rates so that they can blame the economic decline of working Americans on their alleged lack of moral values.

What da huey? I thought transparency was the name of the game for our tax payer funded tech park? Can we hammer those that assured us that we would know the score prior to slapping together the land of oz? It's happening again, isn't it? We've been hoodwinked...bamboozled...
From Krugman’s Blaming the Victims of Inequality:
“the sudden fuss about values makes perfect sense from a political point of view, as a distraction from the issue of soaring incomes at the top.”
It would seem the most important value is political expediency.
Maybe, the only answer to get FOI to work in Little Rock is to go after the way the Board of Directors is structured as it currently isn't "one man-one vote". There is no reason for 3 at-large members of the Board except to keep the "haves" in control. Go for Ward representation only so everyone on the Board is accountable to at least one segment of the populance.
Or push for North Little Rock to annex Little Rock and totally wipe out the Board and a lot of duplicated city positions.
Thanks eLwood, Signed myself right up!
Are you loving Downton Abbey? I hear there will be a season 3.
Yes Nanc. I'm checking for a DVD on Season 1. There should be a season 3 of Downton Abbey. Superb show because it's set in a major turning period of England where the vestiges of royalty are giving away to new economic and world realities. Similar to "The French Lieutenant's Woman," only a later period.

Be of good cheer my liberal buddies! Rick Man-On-Dog Santorum won all 3 of the silly Republican voter things held today!
This will keep the GOP primary blood bath going thru the summer, but most importantly....I say MOST IMPORTANTLY, it shows that good God fearing Midwesterners WILL NOT VOTE FOR A MORMON.
These idiots didn't vote FOR Santorum because they like his 13th century thinking on sex, they voted AGAINST the Mormon! So please God, Allah, Buddha, Flying Spaghetti Monster....let it be Romney in November!
Max, There is a difference between Pregnancies and Births. THe article got it correct: we lead in births. You got it wrong, we do not lead in pregnancies (about 10th last I looked). The difference is abortions.
Crime, school drop-out rate, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease are reported in higher proportions in states where laws permit school corporal punishment. Along with capital punishment and restricted women's rights, we evince a harshness in social control that does not result in the intended outcomes. Arkansas is one of 19 states that still permit teachers to hit the pupils in their care. Compared to the 31 states that protect their school children from this sort of adult-on-child violence, the statistics on crime, school drop-out rates, teen pregnancy and STDs are not revealing any evidence of corporal punishment's benefit to youth or to society. We could do away with it for free.
OK, so I'm over a month late in this comment, but I just saw the piece about Arkansas having the highest teen birthrate in the U.S.--and, presumably, in the entire industrialized world. I loved reading the comments previously posted here, as they further enlighten my view. Especially the one that offers an explanation as to why Arkansas ranks "only" 10th in teen pregnancy but #1 in live births. It's because girls in many other states, including presumably in other POOR states like ours, have access to abortion. Since the death of Bill Harrison here in Fayetteville I believe there is only facility in the entire state that offers abortion services. And the recent decision by the medical gas-service company to stop providing the Little Rock clinic with necessary medicinal gas may effect a shutdown of that facility. Clearly the anti-abortion movement is becoming more successful at pushing its members views on the rest of us, not because of the power of their arguments but because of their bullying tactics. All which leads right back to the problem of all these children having children.
But is this just a desired outcome of the anti-abortion movement? There's no doubt that abstinence-only does not reduce sexual activity in children. It's a morals education approach, not a sex education approach. Abstinence-only is just as much a crusade as the anti-abortion movement is, and I mean crusade in the sense of a religious war against perceived infidels. Both of these are elements of the never-ending Culture War.
I wonder if anyone has compiled the data that would indicate what percentage of the children from these teen births are given up for adoption immediately, which are kept in the custody of the mother--which most often means, in the custody of the grandmother, and which end up being wards of the state for some period of time, in custody of foster parents?
That would be very helpful information for those of us who would like to take on the Forces of Darkness in the Arkansas Campaign of the Never-Ending Culture War.
Or, "acclimation."
I guess this is a civil union.
