Thursday night line

Posted by Max Brantley on Thu, Feb 9, 2012 at 4:25 PM

Open for your comments. My final ones:

* FAYETTEVILLE ACCOUNTANT GETS NINE YEARS: Kimberly O'Dell, a former Fayetteville accountant, got a nine-year federal sentence for swindling clients out of more than $1.5 million.

* FOOD STAMP PRESIDENT: Nice little YouTube on the president who produced record increases in recipients, benefits and total expenditures on food stamps. No, it's not the Kenyan.

* BRITS BESTED BY 'WILD WEST' ARKANSAS: Furor in British press over a Fort Smith firm winning the contract to print tickets for the 2012 Olympics in London. This account refers to Fort Smith as a "Wild West" town. Imagine if they could meet DBI. Daily Mail, also using "Wild West" label, calls it a "kick in the gut" to England.

* WHAT IF THE TEA PARTY HELD A SEMINAR ON PICKUP LINES? They did, at CPAC convention. Talking Points Memo covered. One suggestion: Take that blind date to a gun club. PS — Better they talk about pickup lines than go to the anti-diversity session that featured white supremacists.

Meanwhile at CPAC, Michele Bachmann (where was Alice Stewart?) blabbered and blithered and tried to remember to blink, as usual.

Now that she's announced she's running for re-election in Minnesota, those in the know shrug, "What are she and Marcus going to do when she loses? It's not like the clinic's pulling in tons of gays to convert."

Maybe open a dance studio called M & M's, ya think?

Maybe Michele and Marcus (luv the M&M's) can fall back on the gov subsidies they've enjoyed for so long from the Farm Bill..it works for Ark's leading rightwing families.

Otherwise, Michele has additional skills:

A Democrat states the sun rises in the east.

An outraged Republican claims that saying so, the Democrat favors communist China and is therefore anti-American.

The shaken Democrat asks for a compromise.

1.5 milion
9 year sentance
$166,000 per year.

Sentancing guidelines should be that prison time is equal to minimum wage annual salary.

$1.5 million /$16,000 = 93.75 years.

To be the forgiving type we could round down to 93.

RightHaven can garnish my bank acct for doing this IT IS Letter of the Week:

Goosing the problem

Made aware of my master’s degree in wildfowl management and my vast knowledge of wildfowl behavior, Mayor Pat Hays of North Little Rock contacted me regarding the goose problem in Burns Park. My longtime agronomist friend who lives in Taiwan, previously in Peking (now Beijing), knew of a similar problem encountered years ago with ducks. It was solved by creating a delicious dish known worldwide as Peking duck. My friend Sum Ting Wong said with the influx of money from Wal-Mart and Washington, D.C., China is now a no-kill country and uses a method called shee shoo. Highly trained, very expensive sheep chase the fowl away, keep the grass groomed and add stunning green color by a process called elimination. Hays nixed this, saying taxpayers would fear getting fleeced.

My other very effective method was to record Bobby Petrino cursing, then play this over loudspeakers. Problem solved. Goose game over. This works. I tried this in my backyard; two feral cats and one armadillo have not returned, and my neighbors moved, too. This could be implemented worldwide with Petrino receiving obscene royalties and the University of Arkansas worldwide recognition.

I also recently met with folks from McDonald’s who were very interested in my idea of a seasonal sandwich called the McGoosme. I’m still working on how to order this sandwich when standing in line with someone behind me.

Folks, this is all true. You just can’t make this stuff up.

For those who do not like the "sun rises in the east" example above, tell me when, in the last 20 years, the Democratic delegation did not capitulate to Republican nonsense. The health insurance law does not qualify, because of all of the poison pills they allowed to be put in and the financial bonanza for the insurance companies.

As cynical as eureka sounds at times, reality has proved him correct more often than not.

We have allowed our political system to wallow in ignorance and deception. De Tocqueville, 200 years ago, warned of mobocracy taking over our government. It has happened. There are too few heroes to stand for our citizens. And too many corporate prostitutes.

From the Ark D/G:

""A group of Arkansas lawmakers is calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would require the backing of a majority of state legislatures before the nation’s debt ceiling can be raised.

The group announced Thursday it would push for a resolution in the session that begins next week calling for a constitutional convention to be held on the proposed amendment. The resolution was introduced Wednesday and has the backing of 15 Republicans and one Democrat in the Legislature.

The proposed amendment would require a majority of state legislatures to support an increase in the debt ceiling before it could be raised.

Backers of the amendment say two other states have approved identical resolutions.""

Sounds like some more Rethuglican bullshit to me, but who is the Quisling? Max?

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get hold of the [Republican] party, as they're sure trying to do, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've had to deal with them."----Barry Goldwater

"The proposed amendment would require a majority of state legislatures to support an increase in the debt ceiling before it could be raised."

It would be the dumb southern legislatures who would push for it and then be surprised when they suddenly had a state budget issue without the large amount of federal aid that keeps them in business. There isn't a single southern state who doesn't get back more in federal aid than the state residents pay in on taxes. What an easy way to cut the federal budget!

The southerners might wonder why the east coast and west coasts legislatiors would be so enthusiatic about the idea but they are the ones supporting the southern states and their hateful attitudes toward people who don't live in the buckle of the Bible Belt.

Last night, in a moment of disillusionment, I expressed doubt about our president, and indicated that I might agree for once with Eureka Springs. Maybe it was the bourbon. Outlier quickly pulled me back to reality, by pointing out all the other things besides health care that Obama has accomplished. In a more lucid moment tonight, I must proclaim to all how important it is for the President to be re-elected. Just read Max's posts tonight if you want to get an idea about the alternative. I am sorry I wavered.

By the way, did you all notice Max's reference to DBI in his note about the British reaction to the Fort Smith firm getting the Olympics contract. I have been trying to visualize DBI as a gunslinger, and I just don't see it. In the Old West, I think DBI probably would have been the scribe who wrote everything down, and then sent it back to the Eastern papers, in the fashion of Ned Buntline, thus creating legends in the process. Not too many people can write like he can.

Santorum is revving up the party faithful with horror stories about environmental terrorists.

Is he talking about the terrorists poisoning our water supplies?
Is he talking about the terrorists destroying our transportation system?
Is he talking about air-borne poisons?
Is he talking about the terrorists destroying whole communities?

Then he's talking about the corporations that funding his campaign: the frackers, the coal companies with landslides and with carcinogens in the air. If the corporate board members were Muslim, they would be in Guantanamo for their vicious traitorous acts. But they are respected members of the Republican establishment instead.

But, no, he accuses those trying to CLEAN the air, water, and land as being "terrorists." It's "Alice in Wonderland" and "1984" ... and repugs are eating it up.

I'm surprised that Cal Thomas is still around. I would have thought that he would have been sent to the Old Guard Rest Home by now. (Outlier, you have to be an Arkie to understand that reference to the Old Guard Rest Home. We once had a wonderful cartoonist in Arkansas named George Fisher, who drew for the old Arkansas Gazette. He created the Old Guard Rest Home, to which all discredited politicians were retired. I think he would have opened it up to a discredited pundit such as Cal Thomas.)

This country has seen the rise in numbers of Ayatollah's to be. When you hear busted logic challenged rhetoric from them all the time, you know they are trying to keep on pushing belief country. Let's make it a simpler country. Don't trouble yourself with fact, (do we really need all that research?), do we really want our youth to learn how to think? (that could become very troublesome) All their guff, that whether they really believe it, they keep on pandering to all who will listen. Of course we all have the freedom of expression and a lot of it is just plain nutty. We live in a country that really does not value learning. If we actually did value education and learning, this would be a very different country.

With all the problems this country faces we are discussing birth control in 2012? Really? Is this all the Repubs have?

You don't see the Catholic Church screaming about Viagra do you, I'm sure that is covered on every Catholic insurance plan.
98% of Catholic women use birth control and this is an issue? Absolutely no one will be forced to swallow a pill, you do realize that Mr. Red Hat?

Unless she secretly quit the race to deliver a litter of bratwursts, in which case forget it.

Thank god it's an open line because I've a secret I've carried for years that I MUST get off my chest. A night of Musts for your Norma, my Razorbabies.

It's this whole Mimi Alford had an affair with JFK thing.

First, nobody CARES, do they? She's not going to make any money off this. I mean, I know she was on Diane Sawyer but I'm talking Kitty Kelley money. Never on the table. That can't be the motive.

Second, her name's Mimi.

Third, Mimi claims it's been a burden keeping her little secret all these years. Now that she's hit 69 (leave it alone, Razorbabies) she must seek release through sharing. On Diane Sawyer. A time of Musts for Mimi too, then.

As it now is with me, Razorbabies, who must share that I myself have been blessed with some 20-30 deeply spiritual liaisons with household names, some who were in holy matrimony with other women, yet who recognized between us a bond so powerful that it spanned eternity and so on.

But I've NEVER shared those transcendent (and incidentally highly remunerative) times with ANYBODY! It's never occurred to me to WANT to. Because . . .

Where is the love in THAT?

I'd come off like just another money-grubbing name-dropping fame-whore, wouldn't I?

Not named Mimi, but still.

Constable Mike Neville
Lives in Springdale, Arkansas

I want to be Constable in my district so no else can. I won't cash the 7.50 per year pay check and I WON'T DO SH*T, I promise.

Elect me for district 4 Constable, I won't do sh*t . I am a 20 year vetran police officer. I am running for Constable to preserve MY piece of mind. The office of Constable should have been abolished years ago. I don't speak of my opponent when I say this, But there are some real un-trained Goobers out there packing weapons under the badge of Constable, and interfering with the trained professionial police officers doing their jobs. Unfortunatley, it will take a constitutional amendment to abolish this un-needed position. Until then I will fight to hold this position to keep our community safe by "NOT DOING SH*T"

Did my Razorbabies hear Howard Stern's gay-rights rant a couple of days back?

You DO know his demographic, right?

Horny young straight guys, older straight guys who think they're young and horny, and the gals who love 'em.

Plus Robin Quivers. So you've got HER demographic. Horny young black straight guys, older black straight guys who think they're young and horny, and black gals.

HUGE bi-racial hetero- demo-. Why Howard Stern makes the Big Bucks.

NSFW.

Now mindful of his audience, listen to Stern tell that demographic he's fucking fed up with all the anti-gay shit.

Unbelievable!

What's next? Don Imus as best man at Mike's and Chuck's wedding?

Because, let's face it. Once his FOX gig ends and his radio gig tanks (NOT his medium), Huckabee's gotta find SOMEBODY to support him.

Meanwhile, here's Howard Stern in rare form.

Glad you were thinking, Plainjim and resolved the doubts.

However, there are still those of us who remember the promises (lies) of the campaign and the administration culminating in the threat to veto NDAA because of unconstitutional indefinite detention without due process clause and the employment of U.S. military within the United States in violation of posse comitatus. . . . Then less than a week later President Obama trashed his oath and the U.S. Constitution by signing it into law and tried to lamely justify it with a 'signing statement.' The same 'signing statements' he bluntly called illegal when used by his predecessor.

So just remember that when you speak of your vote for the 'lesser of two evils' that you are voting for an emulator of George W. Bush and a man who could not keep his word or uphold his oath of office and the U.S. Constitution for even a full one term.

It is unfortunate that President Obama has decided that his word and integrity are as meaningless to his supporters as it is to himself. Some of us still believe we and the country deserve better.
