ANDY GRIFFITH: On receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Andy Griffith has died at 86. Among the interesting early notes: Pollster says he, Billy Graham and Dean Smith were long the most popular figures in North Carolina. Griffith, a native of the state and resident, held a degree in music from UNC.

Martha Shoffner resigns as Arkansas state treasurer

Martha Shoffner, facing federal prosecution in a kickback case, has resigned as Arkansas State treasurer.
Judge Griffen reports on recuperation from bike accident

Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen, injured in a bicycle accident last week near his home, sent me an update this morning from his iPad.
Sources identify Steele Stephens as informant in Shoffner case

I hinted earlier that evidence was mounting that the securities salesman who provided confidential information to the FBI was Steele Stephens, the broker who began enjoying a huge share of Treasurer Martha Shoffner's bond business in 2010.

Before last Friday night, the saddest, most "depressing" Depression-era story I had read was Horace McCoy's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" However, after watching The Arkansas Repertory Theatre's opening performance of William Inge's "A Loss of Roses," I can attest that this play is as rough and unflinching as that Depression-era tale, or any other.
