  • LAST SHOW: Was Sunday at Magnolia's Cameo.
I alerted Mike McNeill, who runs the Magnolia Reporter website, of a Magnolia angle in a New York Times story today and he provided a paradoxical counterpoint.

McNeill reports here on Magnolia's "last picture show." The Cameo Theatre, shown in a photo by McNeill from his website, closed Sunday night after a history spanning 63 years.

Maybe Magnolia can replace movies with books.

The New York Times article I referenced was about the big sale of books at author Larry McMurtry's expansive bookstore in Archer City, Texas, the setting for McMurtry's novel and film, "The Last Picture Show." From that article:

Eric Stuart, 30, and his wife, Caitlin, 23, came to the auction from Magnolia, Ark., with a 24-foot trailer and 900 broken-down boxes. They’re starting a store called the Full Nelson, named after their infant son. After the first two hours of bidding on Friday, the Stuarts had purchased 17 lots of books. Mr. Stuart estimated their outlay at 60 cents a book.

If the Stuarts are successful, maybe they could move into the old Cameo.

As several have noted, David Letterman made Mark Pryor his stooge of the night last night for his vote with the NRA to defeat legislation to expand gun purchase background checks to gun shows.

  • Speaker Davy Carter's got game — nobody loves guns more

Good way to distract attention from unhappiness over House Speaker Davy Carter's failure to move expeditiously enough for some Republicans on the House vote to legalize vote suppression (voter ID) in Arkansas by overriding Gov. Mike Beebe's veto.
