David Gergen to speak at Philander Smith

Philander Smith's Bless the Mic lecture series continues Thursday with a talk by David Gergen, former White House adviser and journalist who now teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School.

It's free. 7 p.m. Thursday, M.L. Harris Auditorium.

Sierra Club says ExxonMobil far short of accounting for spilled crude

The Sierra Club said today that the ExxonMobil cleanup effort after the pipeline break at Mayflower remains several thousand barrels short of accounting for the estimated 5,000 barrels of heavy crude from Canadian tar sands territory that spilled before the pipeline was shut off.

UPDATE: FBI confirms State Treasurer Martha Shoffner's arrest, apparently for official misconduct

The shoe drops. This mug shot of Democratic state Auditor Martha Shoffner appeared on the Pulaski County sheriff's office jail intake page late this afternoon.
Judge Griffen reports on recuperation from bike accident

Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen, injured in a bicycle accident last week near his home, sent me an update this morning from his iPad.

'A Loss of Roses' a stunner

Before last Friday night, the saddest, most "depressing" Depression-era story I had read was Horace McCoy's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" However, after watching The Arkansas Repertory Theatre's opening performance of William Inge's "A Loss of Roses," I can attest that this play is as rough and unflinching as that Depression-era tale, or any other.
