The evening line

Still powerless in Hillcrest. 4WD got me off my street but it was a nail-biter going and coming back.

Gov. Beebe has issued a statewide disaster declaration. No disaster at the Capitol, however, where the grounds crew has swept the surrounding drives of nearly every speck of snow.

Huge line in McDonald's downtown, crammed with people who had left cold houses for food and warmth.

Entergy says some may face seeing in the New Year without power. The update system on outages is not yet ready to predict restoration of power on my street. So to conserve the phone, I am checking out

UPDATE: Gun control group to spend $350,000 against Pryor

Politico reports that the gun control group backed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is following through with plans to buy TV time — $350,000 worth — criticizing U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor for helping defeat some modest gun measures recently, particularly universal background checks.

'A Loss of Roses' a stunner

Before last Friday night, the saddest, most "depressing" Depression-era story I had read was Horace McCoy's "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" However, after watching The Arkansas Repertory Theatre's opening performance of William Inge's "A Loss of Roses," I can attest that this play is as rough and unflinching as that Depression-era tale, or any other.
