Beebe names Martha Miller to head Arkansas Heritage Dept.

MARTHA MILLER: New Heritage leader.
  • MARTHA MILLER: New Heritage leader.
From the governor's office:

Governor Mike Beebe has named Martha Miller of Little Rock as the new director of the Arkansas Department of Heritage. Miller replaces Cathie Matthews, who retired at the end of 2012 after 15 years of leading the agency.

"Martha is a life-long Arkansan who has strong experience within the department and with state government," Beebe said. "Promoting her from her position as deputy director was an easy and sensible decision in light of Cathie Matthews' retirement."

Miller, 60, previously served as Deputy Director for the Department of Arkansas Heritage Museums. Formerly a self-employed attorney and lobbyist, she has served on the boards of Lyon College (her alma mater), the Little Rock Interfaith Hospitality Network and Audubon Arkansas.

Miller went to work in the Heritage Department's museum division about a year ago (and not long after riled the NAACP with a change at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.) She has a long political history. Her father, John Miller, was a long-time leader of the state House of Representatives. She once was married to Morril Harriman, Beebe's chief of staff.

They helped force a crafty veteran Democratic governor who was eager to go forward with expansion to consider alternative approaches. • UPDATE: No vote today on effort to override veto of vote bill

Rep. Stephen Meeks said on Twitter this afternoon that he wouldn't move for a vote today on a House vote to override Gov. Mike Beebe's veto of the Republican Party's voter ID bill, national cookie-cutter legislation the GOP has rolled out to suppress the vote of traditional Democratic constituencies that lack driver licenses and ready means to go through steps needed to get required ID. Meeks later told the AP the delay was because of a long agenda and that he'd try next week.
