Progress on Sherwood electric rate protest

Posted By on Mon, Jan 14, 2013 at 1:54 PM

A group formed to oppose Sherwood's approval of a new wholesale power supply contract with North Little Rock reports that it has gathered enough signatures to refer the ordinance to a vote. The signatures still must be certified. We reported yesterday on North Little Rock's lobbying for the new deal.

The group's release follows:

Citizens of Sherwood Together (COST) — a grass-roots citizens volunteer group, calling for a ballot question on Sherwood Ordinance 1953 — thanks the citizens of Sherwood for their tremendous support enabling us to deliver this morning 276 additional petitioner signatures to the office of the City Clerk, City of Sherwood, Arkansas.

With this delivery prior to the expiration of the period set by Sherwood for COST to bring in new signatures, the group has provided the city with nearly 1,800 total signatures with qualifying petitioners well in excess of the 1,413 minimum number of petition signatures required, as defined by the Sherwood City Clerk.

The group now waits for Sherwood to validate the new signatures provided, and provide our citizens with its plan for a special election. The city disqualified 299 original signatures only to report last Wednesday that 122 originally deemed deficient are valid. COST further identified 35 signatures with documentation and awaits the city’s action to add them to the valid petitioner listing.

With the delivery today of the second group of new petitioner signatures, sufficient signatures have been filed to qualify the petition for a special election so the citizens of Sherwood can vote FOR or AGAINST Sherwood Ordinance 1953.

If the COST AGAINST perspective wins that vote, that provides a strong message to Sherwood City Council that citizens oppose the higher North Little Rock Electric Department rates along with the special tariff which brings $470,000 back to the Sherwood general fund without the citizens getting a choice.
