After the House voted today to override the governor's veto of his blatantly unconstitutional 12-week abortion ban, Sen. Jason Rapert celebrated by filing yet another bill aimed at curbing women's access to care. It's cookie-cutter legislation from Americans United for Life aimed at crippling Planned Parenthood. It would create a subchapter in Arkansas law called the “Defunding the Abortion Industry and Advancing Women’s Health Act of 2012” (because really, who has time for changing dates, when you're on a mission from God) that would prohibit any public money from going to any organization that directly or indirectly subsidizes an abortion provider.
Of course, federal and state law already prohibits public money funding abortions. All money from the state goes towards the 97 percent of services Planned Parenthood provides besides abortions. Useful things like free and affordable access to breast exams, contraceptives and sexual education. This bill wouldn't just end the flow of that money, it would halt it coming in from the likes of the Komen Foundation, if continuing to receive state or federal money is important to groups like Komen.
H/T to the Arkansas Legislative Digest blog for word that the bill had been filed.

Commonsense, it's actually a provision of the Arkansas State Constitution from 1874.
