The Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of Fort Smith native Anne Patterson, a career diplomat, to be assistant secretary of state for Near Easter affairs. She had been ambassador to Egypt and engendered some controversy in that job by discouraging street protests against the new Egyptian government. The Senate vote was 78-16, Stephens Media reports, but she was supported by both Arkansas senators.
