It could be worse; Ted Nugent could be campaigning for the next Arkansas governor

Political trends in Arkansas aren't heartening for populists, progressives and other broad-minded sorts. But it could be worse.

You could be in Texaswhere the perverted, violent and crude Ted Nugent is proudly rolled out as a celebrity endorser of the leading Republican candidate for governor. Cat scratch fever, anyone?

Or you could be in Mississippi, where somebody draped a Confederate battle flag (just a historic symbol, not a racial statement, the South's Last Defenders will insist) and a noose around a statute of James Meredith at Ole Miss.
