Choom gang open line

Posted By on Thu, Feb 5, 2015 at 5:42 PM

Would-be Rev.-Pres. Mike Huckabee can't believe the press finds his 17-year-old writings about the temptations of dancing interesting

The scandal with me is that I wrote a column at age 17 telling Christian young people to live a godly life. So, I mean, I just had to say, is this really controversial? I’d much rather have to defend this than say, yes, I used to regularly be apart of the choom gang. It’s just bizarre."

I confess that I am so unhip or uninformed that had to look up "choom gang." Choom is slang for marijuana; the "choom gang" was what a bunch of high school kids in Hawaii, including our president, called themselves. Apparently, despite his fears of the cha cha, the Huck knows all about choom.

Have at it.

  • Townsend Wolfe, 1935-2017

Max has posted on the Arkansas Blog the news of Townsend Wolfe's death. The photo Max chose is a great one, but I also wanted to put up this one of Wolfe with his trademark brown cigarette. A More cigarette? A Tiparillo? I don't remember, but I do remember that Wolfe was seldom seen without one. The last time I interviewed him, after the ill-fated "World of the Pharaohs" exhibit, he had quit smoking, but out of long habit patted his shirt pocket, where he'd always kept his cigarettes, from time to time thinking he'd find a pack there before remembering he'd given them up.
