Former legislator Denny Altes, of Fort Smith, has been appointed by Gov. Asa Hutchinson to be the state’s drug director. 

Longtime legislative watchers will remember Altes for introducing a lot of nutty legislation that never went anywhere. His greatest hits include a bill to establish a curriculum for teaching the Bible in public schools, one that required federal law enforcement officials to obtain permission from county sheriffs before making arrests in their counties and another to allow open carry
