The doldrums of the off season have officially set in up here in Fayetteville, and I must admit that I've been straining for material. I spent Memorial Day putting together a playlist of Arkansas-centric songs, some with only the slightest connection to the Hogs — a Razorback mixtape to hold us over for at least another 45 minutes or so. In high school, we used to listen to Metallica to get “pumped” before games. These tunes ain't exactly “Enter Sandman,” but maybe they'll get your blood flowing anyway.

1. “Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go” by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters

The Midnighters recorded the original (and considerably raunchier) version of “The Twist,” led by Hank Ballard, a singer/songwriter whose best work was on par with Chuck Berry. They probably aren't talking about our Hill on this track, but the song gets me excited for game days nonetheless.

2. “I'm a Hog for You” by the Coasters

I chose the Coasters' version of this song rather than Clifton Chenier's big hit for obvious reasons. The King of Zydeco was likely an LSU fan.

3. “Arkansas Blues” by Teddy Grace

Someday maybe I'll leave Arkansas, and songs like this make me miss it already.

4. “Hog Wild Too” by Pee Wee King

R&B + Country = Western Swing. R&B + Country + Polka = Pee Wee King. It doesn't get more cartoonish and fun than Pee Wee King. This is party music. Throw it on after we beat Texas.

5. “Go Hog Wild” by Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers

This band's probably the closest thing to Metallica on the list, and if you saw them live, you'd catch my drift. The Shack*Shakers occasionally grace Little Rock with their electrifying and weird road show. Don't miss out. Colonel J.D. is a personal hero.

6. “Down in Arkansas Among the Sticks” by Bookmiller Shannon

The ideal soundtrack for a highlight video. Or a blooper reel. Depends on the season.

7. “Razorback” by Earl Hooker

Hooker played with just about everyone: Muddy Waters, Ike Turner, Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson and many more. Proximity must've given him an idea or two while recording this instrumental track for Sun in Memphis.

8. “Arkansas Hard Luck Blues” by Lonnie Glosson

Any Hog fan can relate to this story. “I've been cussed and discussed,” indeed.

9. “If You Like Fat Women” by Cedell Davis

This guy plays slide guitar with a butter knife. He's talking about Pine Bluff. The sessions were recorded by Little Rock native Robert Palmer. I don't think I need another reason to put this song on the list.

10. “Bring it on Home” by Sonny Boy Williamson (II)

My buddies and I once had a long discussion of what our Wiffle Ball walk-up music would be, and I chose this without blinking. The “King Biscuit Time” harpist is one of the toughest bluesmen of all time. When the original Sonny Boy Williamson came down South to try and reclaim his name, Rice Miller — who adopted the moniker to sell records — sent him packing. Aaron Murphree is welcome to steal my idea; it's better suited to him anyway.

11. “Arkansas Fight Song” by University of Arkansas Razorback Marching Band

One of my favorite songs of all time.
