Kat Robinson at Tie Dye Travels has the scoop on a new snack item to be sold at the State Fair next month -- pig lickers, or chocolate dipped bacon. It was a hit in Minnesota, she reports.

I just report 'em, I'm not planning to sample them. Unfortunately, I am allergic to bacon. Maybe that's fortunate in this case.

A lot of the food blogs that Slashfood carries are always doing something wacky with bacon. I gave in and ordered some bacon salt (contains no actual bacon) and I like it. I keep it at my desk and shake it on salad to pretend I'm eating real food. I glanced at, but didn't follow the links to stories about candied bacon and bacon infused vodka. There are people going nuts for bacon out there....

Ohhhh man - I love anything involving bacon and I've been dying to try the chocolate covered bacon! Well, I guess I could have tried to make some at home, but why bother now when the fair is right around the corner. Yay! If you couldn't tell, I'm one of those people going nuts for bacon - hell, I had a bacon martini in Vegas over a year ago. Admittedly, the strips of bacon floating in a bottle of vodka smelled/looked pretty rank but tasted decidely bacon-y (I managed to drink a little over half, vodka's not really my thing). Kat - ALLERGIC TO BACON!? That's one of the saddest things I've ever hear (y'know, food-allergy-wise). I'll try to eat an extra piece for you every time I eat bacon (like pouring one out for one's homie).

My adult allergy to pork is one of the saddest tragedies of my life. I love pork chops, breaded and soaked in milk gravy -- fantastic BTT sandwiches -- cheddar and ham soup. Love them all. I was 19 when I started to have trouble digesting pork. Within three years I couldn't even eat gravy without severe trouble. Now pork of all sorts is completely off-limits to me. Being an Arkansawyer, that's double the tragedy. I try to comfort myself in the knowledge that I'm leaving more bacon for the rest of the world. I've been out at the Fairgrounds and will have pics of the Arkansas version of the Pig Licker soon.

You don't have to go to the state fair to try this. You can get it at Fresh Market in LR, where I bought a chocolate bar by Vosges, a high-end, self-described "haut chocolat" boutique, with applewood smoked bacon. Granted, the bacon is in little bits, rather than a whole rasher. The effect is tasty, somewhat akin to crunchy toffee and chocolate. But at $7.50 per bar, I wouldn't buy it often. Click on my name for the Vosges webpage describing the bar.
