Breakfast and Pie.

I'm not even going to pretend I know what that there above creation is. I can tell, as I'm sure you can, that it's egg and ham and bell peppers and bacon and onions and mushrooms and jalapenoes and a couple of different types of cheese. It's pretty in a weird way.

What I can tell you is that the above photographed omelet, as well as that very tempting slice of Mile High Pie to the right, are the products of a 50-some odd year old diner in Benton called Ed and Kay's. And if you haven't been, you should go, at least once.

I can't tell you how good that omelet was, because frankly, I didn't try it. I can tell you my companion was very much into it, and that she wasn't able to finish it, much less the accompanying pancakes or home fried hashbrowns.

What I can tell you is that the chicken fried steak I had for my breakfast was tender, a little crispy, meaty, well seasoned and ungreasy. And the over easy eggs were perfect. Perfect. Couldn't ask for a better turned egg.

I can also tell you that the home fried potatoes were expertly cooked, as good as you remember then from childhood, just like they came right out of the cast iron skillet at your grandmother's house good. I could tell you that. Hey, I think I just did.

See, that's the thing. Everyone knows about Ed and Kay's pies. They know the meringue is a mountain, that you can have a half-slice if you're watching your calories and still end up with more meringue than you'd ever need. They know about PCP (Pecan, Coconut, Pineapple) and its infinite charms, about rich chocolate meringue and tangy lemon meringue and frothy smooth with bits of coconut meringue. They might even tell you that if you're not in a meringue mood your best bet is the chocolate pecan pie. And they'd be right.

They might also mention the ever changing lunch special, and the fact that the folks who run the place supplement the menu during the growing season straight out of the garden out back. And they'd be right about that too.

But this week we're talking breakfast, and I'm talkin' about some mighty fine eggs and such. And I'd just suggest you drop by if you're down Benton-way. You'll find Ed and Kay's on the southwest side of town, in that last bend of the I-30 westbound service road. Take the Sevier Street exit. They open at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday.  (501) 315-3663.
