Indian food truck Banana Leaf now open

Posted by Lindsey Millar on Wed, May 11, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Banana Leaf

The food truck explosion continues. Last Friday, Chan Pethaperumal and Poorni Muthaian opened Banana Leaf, a mobile kitchen that serves Indian food. Husband Chan and wife Poorni hail from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. But Chan said today that Banana Leaf menu covers all regions of India. It includes the likes of dosas, kati rolls, biryani, coconut rice and vegetable pilau with tandori chicken. The menu will rotate, he said, with daily specials listed on Facebook and Twitter.

Chan said he expects to be truly mobile with the truck, but at least in the near future, it will be at 201 A Street, two blocks behind the Exxon on the corner of Van Buren and Markham. Hours of operation are 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number is 501-227-0860.

Anybody tried it yet?

We had lunch here today. There was a choice of vegetaian or meat based lunch special. Both with rice & raita (sp?). Also had 2 samosas. It was quick, fresh & very tasty. $5.00 for each plate, I might have to eat here everyday :)

I got lunch there today. I had the curry chicken lunch and she the vegetarian paneer dish. Five bucks gets you a decent helping of rice and whatever the lunch is. It was tasty, but I tend to like my curry a little spicier, but I realize not everyone likes that. I also ordered the onion/spinach pakovas, which were fried up and mighty delicious. I absolutely look forward to seeing what else they serve up in the future.

I know very few, if any, will read this since the post is buried. Nonetheless, I swung by the leaf for lunch. First, I LOVE Indian food. I really wanted this to be good. Sorry, but it wasn't. It was just meh. Chicken and rice with some eggplant dish that was very bland. I ended up throwing it out and heating up a microwavable Indian frozen dinner I had. It was much better.

I will try it again though. I always give new places at least two trys before I will completely disavow.
