A Bar Louie brunch

SWEET STUFF: Doughnut at Bar Louie
A good eye-opener is key to any breakfast. I suppose if you get along to brunch without one, well, you really need something that’ll make those lids snap to the upright position. And in case you haven't checked it out, there is indeed a Native's Guide on great brunches in Central Arkansas.

At Bar Louie on the weekend, you go in for brunch and the first thing that arrives at your table is a bag of house-made doughnuts. If that’s not an eye opener… well.

Seriously, though — they arrive in a paper sack, six hand-cut doughnuts dusted in sugar, delivered on a plate with three containers of dip. One’s a raspberry couli, the second a vanilla frosting, the third a chocolate sauce. Doughnuts are made for dipping, so that’s a good start.

But forget just having coffee with your doughnuts. The standard default beverages are a mimosa or a rather spicy Bloody Mary. Or, if you’re an addict like me, a refreshing glass of iced tea.

But those doughnuts — they’re complimentary. They’re not what’s for breakfast.

There are lots of different options. On my most recent visit, my dining companion chose the Hangover Helper ($8.99) — a skillet full of proteins and vegetation to blow away those mental cobwebs. The skillet is full of scrambled eggs over a bed of tater tots, covered in chorizo and bacon chunks, red and green bell pepper, onion and queso over it all. It’s a big messy blend of stuff to get your motor running.

I was rather pleased with the Eggs Benedict ($10.99), which came with a choice of Canadian bacon, salmon or steak. I chose the latter. Out came the version swaddled in Béarnaise sauce, big chunks of skirt steak on top of the muffin topped itself with tomato and eggs and the sauce and capers on top. I can only fault the dish in one way — the steak needs a steak

knife. Taste-wise, it was a great fulfilling breakfast.

Of course, you’re going to have to wait a little while before you can enjoy some brunch at Bar Louie. Brunch is only served starting at 10 a.m. on the weekends. But there are other things you can eat there — such as pastas and sandwiches and such. And there’s a bar. Well, of course there is.

You’ll find the Little Rock location of Bar Louie in the Pleasant Ridge Town Center (next to M2 Gallery and Bonefish Grill). More information on the website.

I hope the Eggs Benedict was topped with Hollandaise sauce and not Bearnaise. If not, they really can't call it Eggs Benedict.

It was Hollandaise... geez, I know I had a hard weekend, but I can't believe I wrote that!

Most folks don’t think of Stoby’s as a burger joint. It’s best known for a big sandwich called The Stoby that consists of three different types of meat, two cheeses and whatever else you want to throw down on there, on whatever bun you like. But the burgers are pretty notable.
