Still trying to figure out what to get for that special someone? How about an Arkansas food gift?

A couple years ago I did the Arkansas Times Food Gift Guide. The information is still there, ready for your perusal. And there are additions, too. Such as the fabulous oils, vinegars and wines from Raimondo Winery in Gamaliel. The handmade macarons from MaryClare Macarons in Hot Springs. Coffee from WestRock... and from Guillermo's Gourmet Grounds. Chocolates from Kopper Kettle Kandies. Gourmet toffee from Lambrecht in Heber Springs. There are a lot of great places to order from.

But you're just about out of time. For instance, if you want to send someone some peppered bacon (as seen above) or a ham from Petit Jean Meats in Morrilton, you have to order by 10 a.m. Monday morning — with two day shipping (you have until Tuesday for next day rates). For Burge's, your smoked turkey orders are due by Tuesday morning. And so on.

Saw a very nice Arkansas product basket at HAM today when I stopped in for lunch. Pate and cornichon sandwich was excellent, folks were friendly and I can't wait to go back.

Smoked bacon, ham, turkey, cheddar, swiss, summer sausage, and beef jerky are a must at Coursey's Meats near Marshall & just over the Buffalo River on Hwy 65. Wonderful drive with beautiful scenery, amazing smoked products, and just mighty fine. I suggest it to those who liked good smoked products, and if you make the drive you might as well stop at Serenity Farm Bakery, which is right on the way before Leslie, for all your sourdough baked goodies!

Coursey's is fantastic, I must agree. I just wish they had a website!

And if you go early in the day, you have to stop into Ferguson's across the road and get a cinnamon roll. Dang thing will feed a small family, and if you get one to go it comes with a cup of icing. No, really -- a Styrofoam coffee cup full.

Dang, now I am drooling.

I too wish Coursey's had a website. We make the drive once a year to cure our smoked meat craving and freeze other things for the rest of the year. I however did not know about this Ferguson's place, so I will have to check it out the next time I'm up there!

  • Burger joint of the week: Root Cafe

To call The Root Café a burger joint kinda cuts it short. The idea of a “joint” for burgers conjures up the idea of quickly smashed patties on a grill and a certain quantity of grease and gumption. The Root has gumption, but not the grease.

  • Burger joint of the week: David's Butcher Boy Burgers

You’d think with such a quiet opening that the new David’s Butcher Boy Burgers at Markham and Bowman here in Little Rock wouldn’t be seeing much business yet. You'd be wrong.

  • Pieday: Buttermilk at Ashley's

Most great Arkansas pies can be found at mom-and-pop restaurants, diners and the various hole-in-the-wall around the state. But the state's finest restaurant has a pretty darn good pie, too.
