Main Street's newest addition, Montego Cafe, will have a soft lunch opening Monday, Nov. 19 and a grand opening Thanksgiving evening in the space that was once Porter's Jazz Cafe. Montego is a Jamaican-themed restaurant, overlooking a club that will feature local and national reggae acts booked by longtime promoter Chris Bowen. The idea is that you come for dinner and stay, cover-free, or you come for the show only and pay cover. The mastermind behind Montego is Brad McCray, 29, who owns Bears Den Pizza in Conway and who owned On the Rocks (now closed) in downtown Little Rock. Montego will serve Jamaican classics, such as beef patties and curried meats, with a few salads and sandwiches thrown in for the vegetarians. McCray's favorite is the jerk chicken with rice, peas and cabbage. The cuisine should be authentic, since Montego's chef hails from Kingston.
In keeping with the island theme, the decor leans heavily on natural fibers such as burlap and jute, and features paintings by Pine Bluffs artist Ariston Jacks.
Via email, McCray writes, "Can't answer why Porter's didn't make, it but there is no doubt in my mind that Montego Cafe will be successful. I'm very proud of the staff I have assembled, and I believe that the product and the service that we are offering will exceed expectations."
Prices range from $7-$16, with a 3-7p.m. happy hour. Free wi-fi, no smoking. The restaurant hours are 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. Mon. through Fri., 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Sat. with a limited menu until 1 or 2 a.m. Thurs. through Sat. After dinner hours will be 21 and up, with the club staying open till 1 or 2 a.m.
