The Root Cafe and the Dunbar garden will once again raise holy hell with the 3rd annual Hot Pepper Eating Contest, set for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the cafe, 1500 Main St.

To celebrate the upcoming mouth-burn, the Root has concocted The Dante’s Ghost Pepper Inferno Burger, a fiery variation on the cafe’s Dante’s Inferno Burger but made with ghost pepper marmalade. “We’ll post photos of the brave souls who dare this mighty mouth-blazing challenge on our Facebook Wall of Glory!!!” says the Root.

Last year’s top pepper eater was Basel Khalil, who won “without breaking a sweat” and “downed an extra Carolina Reaper as a crowd pleaser!” There will be a cash prize for this year’s winner.

Twelve contestants have signed up so far. Show how you can eat ’em and weep too by emailing theroot@therootcafe.com or give them a call at 414-0423. More details here.
