The last day of May will be a dark day for lovers of fine gourmet baked goods in Little Rock: Silvek's European Bakery, which has occupied premium space just inside the doors of Kroger in the Heights at 1900 Polk St., will be closing at the end of the month.

Owner Silvek Pupkowski announced his retirement late last year, saying that his contract with Kroger would expire in March. Though Silvek initially told reporters that he might being interested in selling the business and possibly training a baker to take over, pastry chef Chelsea Dawes said the last day for Silvek's will be May 31.

She said she has heard several things about what might move in to occupy the space, including a Starbucks coffee shop, or an expanded floral department for the store. Get by there in the next two weeks and show some love to a soon-to-disappear Little Rock foodie legend. They've got some of the best and most artful cakes, chocolates, breads and pastries in town.

Check out their Facebook page here.
