Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art announced today that it will collaborate with the Louvre museum in Paris, the Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago and the High Museum in Atlanta to produce programs and exhibitions of American and European art.

Kind of takes your breath away, doesn't it?

The four-year collaboration premieres with an exhibition at the Louvre of works by American landscape painters Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand and work by a French artist who inspired Cole, Pierre-Antoine Patel the Younger. A day-long symposium at the Louvre on American art collections in the U.S. and Europe, "L’art américain au musée, nouvelles installations et enjeux contemporains internationaux," will be held when the paintings go on exhibit Jan. 14. CBMAA Director Don Bacigalupi and representatives from the Terra Foundation and the High will speak.

“New Frontier : l’art américain entre au Louvre. Thomas Cole et la naissance de la peinture de paysage en Amérique” runs through April 16, if you are planning a trip to Paris.

The six paintings to be exhibited include Cole's "The Wilderness" (in the Louvre's collection), "Landscape with Figures: A Scene from the 'Last of the Mohicans" (Terra); "The Good Shepherd" (CBMAA) and "The Tempest" (High); Asher B. Durand's "View near Rutland, Vermont" (High) and Patel's "The Summer" (Louvre).

The paintings will travel to Crystal Bridges for a May 12-Aug. 13 run and to the High for a Sept. 22-Jan. 6, 2013, run.

Future installations will be announced at a later date.
