Fisk far in future

Stanton MacDonald Wrights Spring Symphony
  • Stanton MacDonald Wright's "Spring Symphony"

The Tennessean reported yesterday that the state will almost certainly appeal the latest court ruling in favor of the art-sharing deal between Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Fisk University in Nashville. The article includes a nice round-up of recent legal battles over the collection, though it omits the O'Keeffe Museum's efforts to stop the sale.

If the attorney general doesn't appeal, which doesn't seem likely according to this article, Crystal Bridges would pay Fisk $30 million for a half share in the Stieglitz Collection, donated to the museum by Georgia O'Keeffe. The move has been criticized by the Association of Art Museum Directors (first link here) as defying the intent of O'Keeffe's gift and others who believe money received from this partial deaccession should go to buying other art, not propping up a troubled university.

About the image above: I always run a picture of O'Keeffe's "Radiator Building" (the Stieglitz Collection's most valuable piece) when I post updates on the CBMAA-Fisk court rulings. For a change of pace, I'm using this Stanton MacDonald Wright painting, also in the Stieglitz collection.

Oddly, this was an issue I was thinking about on the way into work: What has the oil industry, so hell bent on exploiting the Arctic and oil shales here, done to despoil the environment in oil-producing countries?
