An exhibit of photographs made during the Great Depression by famous American photographer/artists Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Edwin Locke, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn and Marion Post Wolcott opens today, Aug. 6, Friday, Aug. 10, in the Butler Center Galleries' Main Gallery in the Arkansas Studies Institute. (The Butler Center website was a tad out of date; sorry!)
The exhibit was developed by Marjorie Hunter as part of her doctoral dissertation at Arkansas State University. The photos, a works project of the Farm Service Administration, a New Deal program, illustrate extreme poverty in Arkansas and the Mississippi River Delta during the 1930s.
The gallery is open daily and will be open after hours Friday, Aug. 10, for 2nd Friday Art Night, which runs 5-8 p.m.
